As I'm sure you've noticed, we haven't posted in quite some time. This is due to a litle internal struggle with our hosting. We're trying to sort out the issue as soon as possible, and we appreciate the fact that some of you are still checking out the site daily.
For the next little while, I'll only be posting soundcloud links, and our banner+images will not show. Ugly, fuck yeah.
In the meantime, here's a great little bootleg from AtV regulars, the Montreal duo known as Grown Folk.
The original tune has been a favorite for a while now, and I was pretty ecstatic when The Dream decided to jump on it. Grown Folk's solid bootleg of it adds a lot of flavor to the great 3am baby-making grindathon that it is.
Also, here's a little reminder: Grown Folk released their debut EP on Templar Sound about a month ago, and it has been getting rave reviews. If you haven't had the chance to check it out, you can grab it on Boomkat or Juno.
Sorry about the severe slowdown on AtV, but we're trying to get everything back in order. Please bear with us for a little while.
After patiently waiting for a few months, we're glad to finally announce the release of Grown Folk's debut EP on the up-and-coming Australian label Templar Sound, who've also released the Dro Carey Much Coke EP & The Bennisons' debut single.
Grown Folk, who've been featured on Avenge The Virgins pretty much monthly, is the brainchild of Montreal-based Drew (formerly Kid Aloha) and Brendan (formerly Roledex). It should come as no surprise to those of you familiar with their past productions that this talented duo is taking the house music world by storm and razing everything in their path. Today, I present to you a preview of their debut EP City Wind, to be released on May 16th on the aforementioned Templar Sound.
From deep, sultry vibes to dandy grooves and heavy percussive riddims, this EP has it all. This is ballroom rave music, with both feet firmly entrenched in the dancefloor. Grown Folk have always been quite versatile in their production style, and have concocted a stunning debut EP that sounds as great and effective at a late afternoon BBQ party as it does at an early morning after party.
The tracklist, in order of appearance in the preview, is as follows:
1. Uptown Shuffle 2. Halfway House 3. V.V.S. (Very, Very Slightly) 4. Block is Hot
The EP will also feature the Dubbel Dutch remix of V.V.S. (Very, Very Slightly) and the Damu remix of Block is Hot, both of which we're really looking forward to hearing.
Once again, the EP drops on May 16th on Juno & Boomkat, so keep your eyes on their soundcloud and your trigger fingers on the refresh button until then. I, for one, am really stoked that these guys are finally getting to drop their debut release, as we've pretty much profiled them since their inception, and it's nice to see their project come to fruition. This release is going to be major league swag, best believe it.
Finally, I've included their immeasurably rad tune Steady Movin for your listening pleasure. Although we had already included it in the post about Truancy Records, I figure that it wouldn't hurt to remind you why Grown Folk is one of the most promising new acts to keep your eye on. Steady Movin' is a nigh-legendary flip on a Cam'ron sample that has gotten a lot of love, and if there's any justice in the world, we'll be able to someday get our hands on the LOL Boys VIP edit of it and share it with you fine people.
Dark, sensual music is the soundtrack to right here, right now. Those r&b slow jams of yore are mutating into mysterious and sultry Four-AM anthems. The DNA of love songs is changing, and I definitely ain't mad at it.
This is a brand new bootleg recently unleashed upon the world by Montreal producer Sinjin Hakwe. Brandy's music is already really sensual and sweet, but Sinjin Hawke cranks the dial a bit further and warps this one into a carnal two-step banger. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of 2011. If this, and his recent material is a barometer for what's to come, oooh weeeee.
You know, it may just be that muted horn sample, but this remix evokes images of a piano bar in New York City. As it progresses, it morphs into a more ravey creature, but still retains that classiness, for lack of a better term. This is music that you'd listen to next to the rooftop pool of a fancy hotel, while stoned on MDMA with a fashion model. This is Grown Folk, refined dance music for the casanova in you.
Bynie pretty much nailed it when he described this remix as Sex Sax re-imagined as a softcore porno. Julio Bashmore's amazing take on High Powered Boys' (Surkin + Bobmo, for those not in the know) Udon is lovemaking music for the future. Teki dropped this remix on Saturday, and I definitely caught feelings on the dancefloor. Bashmore's remix is cinematic, sexy and groovy as hell. What more could you possibly want? (Oh, and he's coming to Montreal fairly soon. Keep your eyes peeled.)
Unbelievable. I can already predict that this will be one of the best releases this year, and one of the strongest debuts in a long time. Toronto's mysterious The Weeknd have dropped their absolutely hypnotic 9 track debut album, and it is a sensual tour-de-force. Don't be surprised if you hear about this album a lot this year.
Have a pleasant afternoon, everyone. Once again, we'd like to thank you for choosing Avenge The Virgins as your peddler of hot crack and great vibes. Come visit us again soon.

Well, it's mid-month, so you know what that means: another edition of the fine Grown Folk Collection series.
Grown Folk, once again, is the collaborative project between Drew Kim and Brendan Neil, two promising young producers/DJs out of Montreal. Since we started covering them four months ago, Grown Folk have gained a lot of attention in the world of house music. They have upcoming releases on Templar Sound & Truancy Records, and has received a lot of praise from such tastemakers as Teki Latex, LOL Boys, the boys of Club Cheval, Chaos in the CBD and many others.
Their monthly mix series is always frighteningly on-point in terms of mixing and song selection, and this month's edition is probably my favorite one so far. It's nice when you see a mix that features so many of the tunes that you've been bumping for the past month, and yet still manages to impress you with the mixing and the careful addition of a few upcoming releases and exclusives. Grown Folk has their finger on the pulse of modern house music, and a confident hold on what the future has to offer. The lines between garage, two-step, house, r&b and dubstep are getting blurred every single day, and Grown Folk is part of the new guard that'll take that one step further. Genres are becoming irrelevant, it is all about the feeling and the vibes.
Enough chatter though, please just enjoy the refined & sexy baby makin' vibes provided to you by Montreal's dapper dons. This is Grown Folk music. Get familiar.
Good evening, friends. While I realize that most of you shall not be reading this, as the holiday of romance surely beckons you elsewhere, either to a romantic supper of sorts with your loved one, or to some other brief passionate dalliance.
However, this post is for those of you who will need a little bit of background music to provide a soundtrack to your experience. Of course, if you leave our playlist on for too long, the next song after this post will be a DMX tune, so that might throw off the vibe somewhat. Actually, given that it will only go to DMX after about an hour and a bit of warm-up vibes...that just might work.
To quote Sebastien Tellier, "Making music that makes people want to have sex is what I wanted to do".
Tonight's tunes are best enjoyed with a glass of Merlot and a touch of sensimilla.
This is damn fine vibe music. What a perfect amalgam of soulful melodies, pitched vocals and tremendous bass lines . Sinjin Hawke is a young, talented DJ/producer out of Montreal. This is a sexy-as-hell swagged out piece of lovestep that you need in your life. Decidedly tight stuff.
Whoa. Two of my favorite producer duos have reunited to make magic for Art Nouveau's EP Air France. While the original Air France is more upbeat, groovy and straightforward house, I prefer the flip on Air France II. Inception-level dreamy vibes and a sweet vocal sample that is lifted from early nineties rave music combine to make something both ethereal and jukey. Footwork music for the soul, as it were. I'd really hoped to avoid this shitty pun, but you won't find a better tune to join the Mile-High Club to this year. Straight vibes. Check out the rest of the EP on Demento Mori's page, it's worth it.
Finally, I've included what is now becoming a tradition on this blog, meaning a post on ATV fam Grown Folk's monthly mix, the Grown Folk Collection. If you have not had the chance to check them out, I've included links to their first and second ones for your listening pleasure.

I had the pleasure of seeing Grown Folk play at Blue Dog this past friday, and while the rest of the night is a complete blur, I do remember their set being filled with sensual futuristic jams. Kid Aloha + Roledex, aka Drew & Brendan, are gaining quite a bit of recognition for their unique twist on the sound of the moment- the bass heavy hybrid of sexy house and r&b. Besides being signed to the Templar Sound label and being featured on Sound Pellegrino's prestigious Podcast series, they've been getting love from names such as Damu, STSQ, LOL Boys, Sam Tiba and more.
Grown Folk Collection N°03 features 2 fantastic new Grown Folk productions, and a great mix of upcoming releases and recent bangers. This is perfect mix of sensual upbeat house, futuristic UK-influenced bass sounds and techno grooves. A nicely interwoven web of the past, present and future of sexy synth sounds . Although I'm starting to sound like a broken record, I genuinely believe that Grown Folk is going to gain a lot of recognition in the music scene this year. Casanova crunk music, people. Get with it.
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, courtesans and conquistadors.
Grown Folk, the great new collabo from Montreal's Kid Aloha and Roledex, have just released the second edition of their monthly Grown Folk Collection mix.
Their first one, which we posted a while back, was very well received, and since this second edition is of extremely high quality, I couldn't resist sharing it with you. If Grown Folk is not on your radar yet, they should be. The mixes they put out are fantastic, and they always include a new production. This time around, it's the groovy V.V.S (Very Very Slightly), forthcoming on Templar Sound (Who've just launched their new blog, too!).
Track Selection = So very on-point. Good lord. I haven't heard a lot of these, but better believe I will be hunting these tunes down.

Tropical Heat - Boy 8-Bit / K7 12. Bobo - Hunnee / Rush Hour 13. Metropole - Kink / Rush Hour 14. One Thing (French Fries Remix) - Amerie / CD-R 15. 13 - Skanky / CD-R 16. PClart - Kavsrave / Numbers 17. Start It Up - Lloyd Banks ft. Fabolous, Kanye West, Swizz Beats, Ryan Leslie / G-Unit 18. 6'7" - Lil Wayne ft. Cory Gunz / Young Money
I hope that you enjoy this fine mix from the East Coast's newest future bass music maestros. It's the perfect soundtrack to a candle-lit dinner, a victorian masquerade rave, a knighting or even a druidic orgy. Grown Folk is pretty self-explanatory, actually. Refined, sexy dance music for those who know how to appreciate the finer things in life.
(lame write-up, perhaps, but I've just worked the night shift and I am fuckin' poooooped. Sleep time.)
I've also thrown in a few other grown-up future sounds for your next romantic soirée. There's nothing quite like deep, powerful bass and haunting melodies to put you in the mood to make magic.
Grown Folk is the brainchild of two up-and-coming Montreal electronic music producers, namely Kid Aloha, who we've blogged about before, and Roledex, a Saintwoods-backed house producer. The two have been DJing and producing together recently, and the result of this meeting of the minds has been dubbed Grown Folk. To quote Mr Aloha himself:
We started making tracks together 2 months ago, and finished up two of them which we sent out to a bunch of DJs. We got really early support from the likes of Melé, Ikonika, LOL Boys, Jacques Greene, Prince Club, Panton, and Chaos in the CBD. We've also signed a deal to make an EP in the spring of next year.
We are bearing witness to the birth of a new movement in electronic music. Of course, the UK is the birthplace of garage, dubstep, funky, and most of the futuristic sounds that are blowing up at the moment. Surprisingly, however, our very own Montreal is home to a ridiculous amount of innovative and progressive producers. From Hovatron to Jacques Greene to LOL Boys to Prince Club to Lunice, we've definitely got enough heavyweights in the game to make a serious dent in the ever-growing bass music scene. There must be something in the water here, as the general tendency for our producers (not to piegonhole, of course) seems to be leaning towards really cosmic, trippy harmonies and spacey melodies coupled with ungodly amounts of sub-bass. Might be the arctic temperatures in winter and the stifling humidity in summer that could be to blame.
Regardless, the reason I've posted about Grown Folk today is to expose another up-and-comer in the scene, and to introduce you to their first mix.
The Grown Folk Collection will be released at the beginning of every month. Simply put, its an hour long mix showcasing new tracks of ours, unreleased material from friends, and anything else we are into at the moment whether it be new or old. Spanning house, techno, disco, garage, funky, and hip-hop we aim to put together a collection of music that is diverse yet still cohesive and relevant.
Tracklist: 1. Birdshell (6th Borough Project Shell Toe Remix) - Craig Bratley 2. Lost In You Like A (Chinese Cookie) - Guy Gerber 3. Purple Drank - Axel Boman 4. I Got One (You're It) (Mercury Remix) - Homework 5. California (Julio Bashmore Remix) - Claude Von Stroke 6. Fruit Boots - Prince Club 7. Your Words Matter - Ramadanman & Midland 8. Steady Moving - Grown Folk 9. (Baby I Don't Know) What You Want - Jacques Greene 10. Once In A While - Lone 11. Brighter Days (Underground Goodies Mix) - Cajmere Feat. Dajae 12. Allnighter - 24Hour Experience 13. Lonely Boy - Hot City 14. Perculator (Zombie Disco Squad Remix) - Cajmere 14. Bitter Sweet - Kink 15. Nikes On My Feet - Mac Miller
This mix is a perfect way to start off this excruciatingly cold winter of ours. Grown Folk's first Collection mix meshes together a great mélange of genres and sounds, and the result bends the space-time continuum and heats up any room it is played in. This is a glimpse into the future of electronic bass music by two forward-thinking producers who definitely love to push the envelope.
My own musical preference of late seems to be heading in the direction that Grown Folk is pushing, but personal taste aside, this is just a great mix of groovy and sexy "house" music. They only have one original production in the whole mix, but if the rest of the stuff sounds anything like Steady Movin, then I'm interested. Let's see what 2011 has in store for this promising duo. With an EP coming out on the recently renamed Templar Sound (formerly Buzzard Beats), these dudes are poised to take over.
Montreal, show some love.
Just in case you were not familiar with these two producers, I've included their solo work as well, just so you get an idea of where they're coming from.
And, to round off the post, I present to you a 192kbps version of Jacques Greene's excursion into audio bliss, released on Night Slugs. (Baby I Don't Know) What You Want is the 2010 Hyph Mngo, in a way, which is high praise, in my opinion. Strangely, it's already one of my favorite tunes this year, and I predict this one'll be huge. Hats off to GDD for the link.
