AtV presents vol 2: Bombé (Us)

The second installment of our long awaited mix series is finally here.

Volume 1 was released way back in April, so we figured it was time to rekindle your love affair with Avenge The Virgins, just in time for the holidays.

After Azamat B's amazing ballroom mix introduced us to the AtV mix series, we knew we had to enlist some top shelf talent to make the second edition as phenomenal as the first.

One of the first people to come to mind was one of our favorite producers, the always stellar Bombé. For those not familiar with the name, we will be more than glad to introduce him. Bombé, formerly known as Kid Queasy, is a titan in the Philly bass scene. He has been producing subwoofer-decimating bangers for a few years, yet has criminally flown under the radar for some reason.

However, in June, he collaborated on a one-off project with fellow Philly DJ Mr Carribean, and they dropped a mixtape called James Drake. To put it lightly, it took over the blog world by storm, getting featured on such influential sites like Pitchfork, Prefix and FACT. A mash-up/blend album featuring (you guessed it) James Blake and Drake, James Drake was a huge success, mainly due to Bombé's mixing and ear for detailed soundscapes. I believe that it now has something like 95 500 plays on soundcloud, which is no mean feat.

All that aside though, the main reason that we are such huge fans of Bombé, for lack of a better explanation, is his absolute mastery of dark, sexy vibes. He's pretty much the sensei of bass, and one of the more innovative producers in the game. I find it very hard to describe his sound, which is always a plus. People first started categorizing it as future bass, but his sound has evolved so much that it is impossible to pigeonhole. A delicate mix of all of the darker elements of grime, 2step, house and techno, Bombé's tunes trigger something nefariously hedonistic within our hearts and spike seratonin levels off the charts.

Chandelier Crunk (disclaimer: Bombé did not come up with this name. Yours truly, on an MDMA hangover, did. I think it fits, though.) is an eerie plunge into the darker side of dance music. Featuring hypnotic selections ranging from Ifan Daffyd, Richelle, FaltyDL, NGUZUNGUZU and more, it is a 48 minute journey into the recesses of our minds. Chandelier Crunk transcends genres, but will still make you two-step without realizing it. Vibe and image wise, it evokes a mixture of a subterranean rave, a drugged-out loft party and a shamanistic ritual. Regardless of the setting, if this is played in a dimly lit room, the energy will get primal, very quickly. Orgiastic opium overtones, to put it simply.

James Drake

James Drake is a one-off collaboration between two Philedelphia-based DJs. Mr Carribean and Bombé have just put out this re-edit/mashup mixtape of James Blake & Drake songs, and surprisingly, it works.

I'm not usually into the whole mash-up scene, but given that Bombé is the homie and I trust his taste/skills, I had to give it a spin.

While a large number of you might not like either Drake or James Blake, this re-imagining of their tunes fits extremely well together, and is the perfect laid-back summer music. This is mighty proper atmospheric r&b for a beautiful day.

Studying for finals, overtime at work, excessive partying. You've all heard these excuses before as to why we don't post as much these days, but it's true. Life gets in the way, but hey, at least we always provide that crack!

Todays's post has been a very long time coming, and I'm glad to be finally able to have a bit of time to devote to it. This morning, I'd like to shine the spotlight on a producer who is no stranger to Avenge The Virgins, the very talented Bombé.

Bombé- Rumba Rustla

Our first post on Bombé was back in November, when we introduced you to his dark rave anthem Brighton. Since then, I've tried to include a Bombé remix or original every month. His productions are always very percussive and a wee-bit heavy on the low-end frequencies, which is definitely a winning combination (no Sheen-o) in my eyes. His songs, while not always the most club-ready bass tunes ever, all share an extremely haunting atmospheric backdrop. Corny as it may sound, his productions are the very definition of epic. This is knife-fight music on steroids, with a healthy dose of chaotic drum programming thrown in for good measure.

If you consider the high quality of his remixes & re-edits, and the unique sound he pushes, it is surprising to me that this Philly powerhouse does not have more of a following than he does already. He also produces slightly housier fare as Kid Queasy, but he's told me that he is devoting as much to the Bombé project as possible, in order to refine his wildly unique sound. His mastery of kicks, snares, toms and other percussion is oftentimes dizzying. This is really rad electronic music that you can both skank out to in a club, and listen to on your soundsystem at home and not get bored of. Call it futuristic garage, tropical bass or whatever you'd like, it doesn't change the fact that this dude's a production wizard.

Bombé has also released a free 3-track EP recently, the majestic three-part Ivy Castle EP. I'm going to avoid the medieval metaphors, 'cause that'd be pretty lame, but it remains that this is an extremely solid debut EP. He's definitely going for a darker, grimier sound, but it is sounding a lot more focused than his earlier material. You'd definitely be missing out if you let this insane EP pass you by.

I'm a firm believer in positive thinking, believe it or not. Since Montreal is still a desolate wasteland of snow and ice (ok, I may be exaggerating, but it's bloody cold), I'm hoping that posting cheerful summery sounding tunes with a lot of bass will help precipitate a rapid change in seasons. I'm ready to start seeing the fine dames of Montreal in sundresses, having that first beer on a terrasse, and BBQs, goddamnit.

Art Nouveau - Air France (Max le Daron Remix) by Max le Daron

A nice mellow moombahton remix of Art Nouveau's amazing Air France track, which was released fairly recently on Demento Mori. Max le Daron, a young Belgian producer making big waves these days, tweaks the original and makes it sound like a soundtrack to the best week ever at an all-inclusive resort in the Carribean. Max le Daron has opened for such acts as Douster, Buraka Som Sistema, Noob, Djedjotronic, French Fries, Club Cheval,BeatAuCue and Noisia, among many others, and is definitely earning his stripes as a producer to watch in the coming year. He's also working on a collaborative project with Javier Estrada, which I'm pretty stoked about. Big ups to the whole Moombahton movement, which I suprisingly still haven't gotten tired of. Airport lounge vibes for the win.

Sigh. Summery vibes, dreamy little melodies that meander around your head, and a warm, delightful little ambient groove that somehow takes me right back to the empty beaches of Vietnam I visited last summer. Good lord. Kudos, ∆dmin, kudos. Elevator music has never sounded so good.

Skanky - Slack by skanky uk

I don't know if this sounds summery per se, but it still puts me in a good mood and makes me want to go out and meet new people. Bass makes you socialize. Skanky is a dope 16 year old producer out of North London who's coming out with some pretty wild material these days. This is a kickass futuristic tune, although it is a bit short. Check out his soundcloud for other fine chunes from this badman.

Shy Fx - Original Nuttah (Ezekiel's cumbiahton edit/mix) by Ezekiel2090

A very effective cumbia/gurachero/dub edit of jungle pioneer Shy Fx's tune Original Nuttah. The traditional slow bass and rhythms are seamlessly interwoven into the double-pace jungle drums and vocals. Much respect to Ezekiel, who has been holding it down for Monterrey, Mexico for a while now.

Bombé- Riviera (Extended Mix)

Simply epic. This is a somewhat older Bombé track, but it fit the theme of today's post like a glove. As usual, Bombé proves himself to be a Sensei of drum programming, and melts an entrancing and memorable flute loop and glorious bass together to make this sound like some kind of boss fight at the end of a magical journey. Warm, positive vibes are what I need right now. Although the tune gets somehat more ravey near the end, I'd still groove to this on a summer night.

Ivy Castle Pt. 2 by Bombé

We've posted about Philedelphia-based Bombé a few times now, so you should be somewhat familiar with his top-quality productions. For those who aren't, I'm planning on doing a profile on him in the next few days, so keep an eye out for that. He is still a relative unknown in the bass music world, which I find ridiculous, but I'm confident that he will blow up soon. This is a gargantuan percussive anthem with a very dark feel. Frightening and funky.

Nou by KRUEGER

Krueger is a Philly-based producer that I've only recently stumbled across. He labels his music as a mix between tropical and future bass, but I'm trying not to put music into sweet little categories anymore. The lines between genres are so blurred these days that to pigeonhole tunes takes something away from the brilliance of the music. This particular tune is like a sinister mariachi anthem of sorts. A sampled ragga vocal is tossed over thundering bass and a misleadingly sweet melody, and your ears and brain are pretty much reduced to rubble. So dope.

Savage Skulls - Caravan (Leo Justi Heavy Baile Mix) by Leo Justi

Like for a lot of people, Diplo was responsible for my first introduction to Baile Funk. While the hype and fervor surrounding the genre has pretty much died down, I started noticing baile vocals and influence creeping into a lot of house tracks. It has a very distinct hypnotic cadence that incites booty-shaking like almost no other genre. Leo Justi is a DJ/producer out of Rio de Janeiro whose remix of Savage Skulls/Tony Senghore collabo Caravan was featured on the most recent episode of the Sound Pellegrino podcast. Duke Ellington doing the dirty with pounding Baile Funk rhythms, now that's a great combo.

Bout The House (original) (Plant Music) by danceswithwhitegirls

Thug house is a movement. This is a forthcoming release on Plant Music that features acid house stylings and trademark Dances With White Girls vocals. His productions all have a great 'New York house' feel to them, and always make me think of a sweaty, drugged-up warehouse rave. It's about the house, y'all. Gospel music on extacy.

Pools VS Biggie - Can I Get Wetcha by poolsmusic

poolsmusic is a new collaboration project between L-A DJ Thee Mike B and San Fran DJ Morse Code. Honestly, their steez is pretty self-explanatory. It's a soundtrack to lounging around a pool. Of course, I'm having a really hard time relating to it, given that Montreal is blanketed in snow, but these looped giggles are giving me hope. Hurry the fuck up, spring. I'm fiending for warm weather. (Also, R.I.P to BIG, lest I forget)

On to other things:

Either one post a day isn't enough for you guys, or we're falling off, according to Google Analytics. Which is why we are going to try to post twice a day from now on, and we're trying to work on a 2.0 version of the site, an overhaul if you wish. The content and the swag shan't change, obviously. We're just going to make it a lot nicer to look at, a lot more varied, and make it easier for you to get around. Either way, that should be ready in the next month or so, if all goes according to plan.

Bombé- Brighton

This Bombé cat sent over this track a few days ago, and it has been on steady rotation ever since. This is an extremely rad slice of tropical bass, and I can hear a bit of UK influence in the marching-band percussion steez. This sounds like it should be played a dark and dank London basement club, with only a strobe light offering a glimpse of the legions of pupil-popped ravers grinding and two-stepping til dawn. This embodies everything I like about tropical bass. I had never heard of Bombé prior to this, but you can believe that I'll be keeping an eye out for his productions in the future. High quality tune.

Serj Tankian- Disowned (V Remix)

Remember that Seventeen Veins group from Montreal that we posted about several months back? Well, we've just received an e-mail from one half of the talented local group, and it seems that they haven't lost their touch. Admittedly, I had not checked out their soundcloud in a minute, but this is a damn good remix. Serj Tankian, from what I remember, is the vocalist from nu-metal band System of a Down, which would normally be a bad thing, but I've always thought that his voice was really unique and dope, so I can definitely appreciate this remix. The name of the producer who made this brutal piece of minimal, horror-show house is V, which I believe stands for Vengeance. Either way, using what sounds like a woman's aroused screams as the backing beat for a dark and grimy sounding tune is a nice touch, I must admit. Ghastly, distorted, and amazing. I wonder what else this V has in store for us.

<3 Night Slugs.

I've been listening to a lot of dark UK bass music these days, and WUT is definitely one of the tunes that I've been obsessed with. I think L-Vis 1990 played this at Velvet last friday, and it definitely set the place on fire. Of course, I was off my face, but still. What a massive tune, seriously. So atmospheric, sensual and powerful. Girl Unit really hit the nail on the head with this one, in my opinion. This is the type of bass/house music that gets you in the chest, and you are forced to groove to it. WUT is one of those eyes-closed, hands in the air, proper future bass sounds. Get with it. An inescapable subwoofer destroying masterpiece, as it were.


And on the off chance that you have not seen it yet, I've included the mighty Dada Life's new video for Unleash the Fucking Dada. It's a massive banger that you should definitely seek out. Personally, I've got a soft spot for those kind of innocent looking hipstery dames, so that's probably why I included it. I mean, the tune's amazing, but again, I dig the slightly unhinged hipster girl. Boom.
