Best of the Rest vol 4

Welcome to the fourth edition of Best of the Rest, our weekly feature that shines the spotlight on my five favorite songs that artists and producers send us. A simple idea, perhaps, but one that hopefully gives more exposure to some talented folks. Hope you enjoy it.

1. Retrotation (USA)

Retrotation- Poppyseed

Retrotation is a producer out of Pennsylvania who has a very innovative take on dubstep. I first took notice of him after he sent us a dubstep track that sampled opera, which I thought was pretty sweet. He aims to bring a bit of originality to a genre that is rather stagnant at the moment, and his recent productions have been quite dope. This particular one samples the SNES game Secret of Mana to great effect, but still manages to sound heavy and housey instead of the corniness that a lot of 8bit dubstep emanates. Not too bad for someone who's only been producing music for about 1 year, huh?

2. Clement Roussel (FRANCE)

Square Mode- One Way (Clement Roussel remix)

What a great sound. Clement Roussel, a talented young French producer, recently released this dreamy remix of Square Mode's track One Way. It meshes together a pleasant amount of electronic white noise, poppy buildups and memorable melodies. This is my first exposure to Clement Roussel, but I'll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for more of his stuff in the future.

3. Death to the Throne (USA)

Lykke Li- Paris Blue (Death to the Throne remix)

I've always enjoyed Death to the Throne's remixes, but the little write-up he included in his e-mail pretty much sealed the deal for me. Even before I hit play, I knew I had to include it. Another (finger) banger, although I'm not too crazy about the brostep steez. Still heavy though.

in celebration of presidents day, i made this here lykke li remix. i've spent a lot time recently at raves and parties, and i have to say i think this whole "house" music thing is gonna be big. i've been inspired to provide a soundtrack for teenagers to finger bang each other to and i believe i pulled it off with this remix. and if i didn't, i don't care. teenagers should be obeying the laws of traffic instead of fingerbanging each other. learn how to text and drive at the same time assholes.

4. Jay Kill & The Hustle Standard (USA)

Jay Kill & The Hustle Standard- Say you won't

This is a song off the collaborative EP between Jay Kill & Charlie Hustle, a sweet slice of folky rock. This tune includes a great piano melody, subtle but powerful drum hits and of course, Jay Kill's distinctive guttural growl. Pretty dope.

5. Flirtphonic (USA)

Flirtphonic- What's Going On

I am really not into mash-ups anymore, but once in a while, there's one that creeps through that puts a brief smile on my face. We've profiled Flirtphonic before, about a year ago, and he recently sent us this mix of The White Stripes' I'm bound to pack it up and Marvin Gaye's What's Goin on. Not re-inventing the wheel, obviously, but it is still a fun mash-up and worth your time.

nous.sommes.des.animaux

Massive post this fine morn'. As per the usual with Avenge The Virgins.

As you know, we love posting about relatively unknown talent that deserves to be heard. Today's post will focus on two artists, Flirtphonic and Dooze Jackers, both who are starting to gain notoriety for their dope and unique take on electronic music. As always, if you dig what you hear, try and support these guys. They definitely deserve it. While some might not have music to purchase yet, dropping a quick message to tell them that you dig their shit/appreciate what they do is a great motivator for most artists.

on with the show!

FLIRTPHONIC (New York/Seoul)

I mentionned Flirtphonic in last week's post, when I gave you his massive remix of Organ Donor. As previously mentioned, I first got exposed to Flirtphonic's music when he reached out to us by e-mail, asking us to check out his stuff. He also mentioned the fact that his Gifted remix (posted below) had been the most popular song on Hypem for a little while, which is quite a feat for someone who hasn't been releasing music for that long. I don't really give a shit about the popularity contest aspect of hypem, but Flirtphonic makes really fantastic music, so more power to him if he can gain exposure through it.

His sound is a distillation of everything you love about electro: heavy distortion that pounds you in the temples, driving synth stabs, and melodies that ring in your ears after the song is done. ATV approved!

Flirtphonic- Bubble Burst
Flirtphonic- Welcome to the Party
N.A.S.A ft Kanye West, Lykke Li & Santigold- Gifted (Flirtphonic remix)

DOOZE JACKERS (Montreal)

Dooze Jackers are a duo from our very own Montreal, made up of the incredibly talented Techjio (I've mentioned him in the past) and DPV. I am perhaps a bit biased, because I read their now defunct blog Le Mothership regularly for over a year, but their output as Dooze Jackers speaks for itself. They, like fellow Montrealers MadKids, are making big waves in the house and electro scenes, due to their relentless work ethic and crazy bangers. Their "Got Line!" track got love from such big names as Sound of Stereo, Foamo,Jaymo & Andy George. These guys DJ and produce as much as they can, and yet do not let themselves be pigeonholed into any particular genre. Dooze Jackers' songs do fit into the new wave of percussive ethno-house, but they are much more than that. They seamlessly weave an array of influences into one maniacally groovy, booty shake-inducing package. Dope shit you definitely need to support. (NOTE: I've included their latest mix "We're Not High, We Just Like Bangers". Mais c'est débile!)

[P.S. Dooze Jackers are playing at Montreal's THEATRE TELUS on Friday with MadKids, Victor Hacala & Designer Drugs. Guaranteed to be an insane show.]

Party Dark- Is that You? (Dooze Jackers remix)
Canblaster- Kapongo Dance (Dooze Jackers remix)
Noob and Brodinski- Peanuts Club (Dooze Jackers remix)

Vous y êtes !* - Episode 3 (mixed by Dooze Jackers) We're Not High, We Just Like Bangers ! by Dooze Jackers

Dooze Jackers MYSPACE

Of course, being the monstrous turd that I am, I've included more music. The first, a massive dubstep tune that is betting burn from a huge amount of DJs around the world. It sounds like a Zelda song to me, but it definitely bangs. The second, a new tune by AtV favorite RUBIX, who kindly let us share this. Très dope, Mr Rubix. You've done it again.

Doctor P- Sweet Shop
Rubix- Disco Electronique

- MDMAwesome, cramming as much music down your throats as physically possible.

under the weather

skirting the line between dapper and debauchery. providing a truckload of spacey beats for a rainy spring morning.

U-Tern- Style, Class, Flair

Vancouver's own unfuckwithable king of new disco-tinged house music. U-tern is one of the best producers in the game at the moment, and he always makes the grooviest and most soulful disco originals or re-edits. This is a brand new original song, and it overflows with funk. This song evokes an image of George Clinton doing blow in Studio 54, at four in the morning. Oh yeah.

Gwen McRae- Funky Sensation (Masters at Work remix)

MAW + Gwen McRae = One of the best party breaks of all time. Get with it, y'all. This is making this shitty morning a little more bearable.

Fred Falke- 8:08 PM @ the beach

My first-born child will be conceived to this song. Fred Falke uber alles. This is baby making electronic music at its best.

Hermanez- Soms

We don't usually post straight up techno, but when I came across this tune, I could not resist. Yes, people, the beat is massively repetitive, but therein lies the beauty of it. A bouncy techno anthem with a great vocal backdrop. I've never been to Ibiza, but if I was on mushrooms, dancing on the beach at sunrise there, this would be the soundtrack to my life.

Pearl Harbor- California Shakedown

Earnest, laid-back indie rock written by two beautiful women. Might not be your cup of tea, but this song fits my mood at the moment like no other.

Cosmin TRG- Strobe Lick
I'm quite surprised that so few people know of Cosmin TRG. He makes really innovative, haunting bass-heavy music in the vein of Joy Orbison. Sparse melodies, spacey basslines and an almost claustrophobic sense of eeriness all characterize his music. Although that pretentious little description might turn some of you off, give it a listen anyways. You won't regret it.

Metal on Metal- Bastard (Seventeen Veins remix)

"The drugs are not working, I'm still dancing, I forgot my name." To quote their myspace, they handcraft brutal minimal music. Seventeen Veins is a duo from Montreal who show great promise. Keep an eye out for these guys, their remixes are monstrous.

BONUS!

A little preview of the next artist feature I'll be doing. We've recently received a bunch of submissions by e-mail, but one that really stood out was Flirtphonic. I'll be doing a full-fledged feature in the next few days, but I'll leave you with a great exclusive. As you know, I love exposing young up-and-coming talent to the masses, so Flirtphonic's music was right up my alley. He's a 21 year old from New York who is currently living in Seoul. I'll leave you with a massive re-work of Organ Donor that will leave you short of breath, with blood dripping out of your ears, possibly on the run from the law.

DJ Shadow- Organ Donor (Flirtphonic remix)

-MDMAwesome, once again providing a metric ton of music. My bad.
