ONE BE LO / BINARY STAR

One Be Lo has always been one of my favorite rappers. Just by the way he expresses himself through his lyrics its crazy. He has one fucking sick flow, he coasts the beat so well. Its far from being the typical rap you hear everyday, you gotta put your underground hiphop glasses for this one. But believe me, this is reaaaaal stuff right here, no fake gangster shit. You wont find any addictive hooks or any electro beats to please your hipster ears. Its pure hip hop, the way it was like when it started and the way it should still be. He first started his career in a rap duo with Senim Silla. The duo was called Binary Star and their fist album, Waterworld, came out in 1999. The story behind this emcee team is quite interesting. They were both doing time in jail ; Senim at some correctional facility and One Be Lo was in an upstate jail. He got transferred to the same place as Senim and since OneBeLo had already gotten respect for his emcee skills at his other jail, it didn't take long that both em met and decided to kick it hard.



When they both got out, they produced the album Waterworld with a budget of 500 $ and touring only Michigan cause they were both on parole and couldn't leave the state. After gaining some respect and more money they remixed the vibes of the 1st album, added more quality and started to get more attention in the underground hip hop scene. They sold 20 000 copies of Masters of the Universe, which is quite good since mp3 piracy didn't really exist, plus they were mad underground but their music style and their way to rhyme as a duo on the beat impressed people. Anyway fuck the blahblah, listen and learn.

T.I ft Pharell Williams- What's Yo Name

Before T.I. made it big, his Southern drawl was a lot more apparent, especially in tracks like Dope Boyz and this one, off of his first album, I'm Serious. Talk as much shit as you want, but early T.I.P is fuckin' classic in my books. His rhyming and swagger was unfuckwithable back when he was rappin' like he was hungry. This song features classic Neptunes production and a vocal assist from the great Pharell Williams, which compliments T.I's smooth pimp rhymes perfectly.

DJ Mouse- Amantes de la Waracha (Original mix)

Post-apocalyptic tribal guarachero, baby. Tribal Guarachero is a genre of music that is a melting pot of reggaeton, cumbia, electro, trance, salsa and house, all hammered into a young South American abomination made on old versions of Fruity Loops, and is played in underground raves with children toting AK-47 and sniffing glue. I love these obscure regional sounds.

Khia- My Neck, My Back (Shlohmo remix)

Shlohmo is a young producer out of L.A who makes music much in the vein of FlyLo, HudMo et al. It's just fantastically weird downtempo instrumental hiphop for stoners, to describe it as accurately as possible. He transforms Khia's nasty ode to oral sex into a stuttering glitch-bass track. Great stuff.

Hot Dollar ft Shawty Redd- Get Naked

I mean, the title is pretty self-explanatory. Get Naked. Vibe music for days.

Adele- Hometown Glory

I don't care if this is overplayed or overblogged or overdone. If Adele's voice doesn't give you chills, you have no soul. She writes beautiful and haunting melodies and lyrics, and this song is a bloody classic. Remember, songs that get popular aren't always byproducts of record labels and PR. Sometimes, the songs are just too stunningly beautiful to ignore.

This one is off Elzhi's album The Preface, very nice sampled instrumental featuring Phat Kat. Phat Kat has a super raw flow on that kind of beats, he spits non-stop fire without almost breathing. Elzhi brings a more chill vibe to it. If you dig J Dilla and old school slum village stuff you need to check out this album. Its different but good.

I'm not too sure how you'll all react to this music, but I know you can't hate on a classic from Snoop Dogg (especially with my more than average Paint skills)!

Snoop Dogg - Gin N' Juice

A while back some friends came across a remix of this song. I must warn you, this is probably not your typical remix. Simple piano, relaxing waves and a narrating voice which could only be bested by Morgan Freeman. I just adore this song, it's funny and emotional at the same time. I recently had an urge of listening to it, but I had lost it along with my iPod. So I used my google searching skills, found it pretty fast and I guess that's the reason I'm sharing it with you today.

While I'm at it, I might as well throw in another remix. Once again, I can't blame any of you for hating, but I like it! This time, The Gourds give the song an American Country style remake. Banjo and Texan accent make this song unbelievable (just wait till the solo). who would've expected it...

10 000 Volt Ghost- Pardon?

10 000 Volt Ghost is a relatively unknown producer out of San Francisco. I don't know too much about him, but the minute I heard this song, I was hooked. I was initially scared that this would be another electro banger, but "Pardon?" is actually a very diverse song; double-time handclaps, huge synths, a deep bassline and a great melody all make an appearance. Relatively simple, yet very effective. Bay Area in the house.

EPMD- Da Joint

Late nineties EPMD is still good EPMD. I love these guys, everything from the production to the flow just oozes dope.

Curtis Vodka- Love has come (Meatloaf Edit series)

A simple, soulful edit of Donald Byrd's tune by my favorite Alaskan producer, Curtis Vodka. He's been releasing loads of free edits in this vein recently, as part of the "Meatloaf Edit" series. If I could spread this shit on toast in the morning I would. Buttery smooth and groovy as hell.

The Fugees- Fiesta-La (The Heatwave refix)

Classic tune Fugee-La vs Fiesta Riddim (Akon's "Gunshot" is probably the most well-known tune on this riddim). The Heatwave Soundsystem are the kings of dancehall edits, in my opinion. Oh-la-la-la.

NGUZUNGUZU- WHAT DANCE?

This L.A duo makes some of the weirdest bass-heavy electronic music out there. Fluokids described them as "Blaqstarr meets trance", which is kind of accurate. The most bizarre array of sounds and influences all stirred into a rave-tastic tropical gumbo. Sirens, a repetitive sample that sounds like the voice of Charlie Brown's Teacher, water dropping into a bucket, rainforest bass and more. Holy fuck.
