Ciara Surgeon (ITFW Remix) by ITFW

Montreal, stand the fuck up. This is an majestic remix of Ciara's Like A Surgeon, reworked, remodeled and swagged out by Montreal duo ITFW. This has to be one of the most mesmerizing r&b remixes that I've heard in a while. It is tremendously smooth and sure to decimate any unsuspecting dancefloor it is dropped on. This tune will be included on the highly anticipated (seriously, it's going to be so rad) Truants Compilation Volume 1, dropping on March 28th on Truancy Records. Ghetto, sexy and futuristic vibes, all in one.

Lethal Bizzle ft Grime All Stars- Pow 2011 (Roska remix)

While Pow 2011 is nowhere as good as the original, it is still on its way to becoming the Grime anthem of the year. Yesterday, prolific London producer Roska dropped this unbelievably heavy and funky remix of Lethal Bizzle's track, which features verses from JME, Wiley, Chipmunk, Face, P Money, Ghetts and Kano. Roska is the forward thinking don of the UK futuristic bass scene, one of London's champions and heralds of dope drum fills and cerebellum-melting sub-bass. Roska, Roska, Roska...

Munchi & Dave Nada- Brazzers Theme (Munchi's Fuck That it's Bangbros remix)

We at Avenge The Virgins are big fans of Dominican/Dutch boy wonder Munchi, who has definitely made a huge mark on club music and is somewhat responsible for the huge takeover of the Moombahton/Moombahcore movement. I profiled him last August, so I'll skip the long description of why I think he's dope, and just leave you with this insane remix he did for Mad Decent signee Dillon Francis & Moombahton creator Dave Nada. This tune basically boils down to a very simple formula: Hardcore porn + Ballistic bass = Munchi. Don't say I didn't warn you.

(p.s) The big homie Stranger Day sent us a really dope tune recently, a rap edit he did of Girl Unit's Wut. He even namedrops Avenge The Virgins in it, which we are beyond stoked about. It's supposed to get played on DJ Benzi's radio show soon, which is why we haven't posted it yet, but we are really looking forward to sharing it with you. Keep your eyes peeled for that, I know you'll love it.

Sinjin Hawke

As promised, here is our feature on Montreal's resident maestro of heavy bass and hedonistic rhythm, the one and only Sinjin Hawke.

Sinjin Hawke is an extremely versatile DJ/producer originally from Toronto, but now #based in Montreal. His material, while unsigned for the moment, is pretty mindblowing. Every single time I've seen him DJ, he's been really solid, and his productions, which we've posted a few of before, are getting exponentially more rad. The quality of the tunes that he's released so far this year make him one of the freshest young producers to keep an eye on in 2011.

Teki Latex of very influential digital label Sound Pellegrino even namedropped him in a recent interview on fellow Montreal blog Duke of Swabia. Big Tings!

Zora Jones & Sinjin Hawke - Through The Night by Sinjin Hawke

As of now, all of the songs on his soundcloud are collaborations, either with his girlfriend, Barcelona-based DJ Zora Jones or with Swedish rapper/DJ/producer Marcus Price, but his solo material is just as dope. He's removed a few of his solo productions from his soundcloud, probably saving them for some nefarious purpose.

You can catch Sinjin Hawke almost every friday at Boomclap, a weekly party that he throws at Blue Dog Motel on St-Laurent. Along with his partners-in-crime Azamat B and Markus G, Sinjin Hawke works to bring new and interesting acts to the Montreal scene. Not only does the dude provide serious vibes and validate my point that Montreal is the one of the hubs of amazing forward-thinking electronic music, he's also one of the main players in bringing amazing underground artists to Montreal on a regular basis.

I try to avoid labeling music these days, so I'll avoid putting his productions into a box. However, if you insist, I'd say it fits somewhere between uk garage, r&b, rap, house, juke, dubstep, techno, dancehall and futuristic bass music. Open your ears and the mind will follow. This is soulful dance music with a metric ton of swag, something you could both grind and propose to your girl to, not necessarily in that order.

Ivy Castle Pt. 2 by Bombé

We've posted about Philedelphia-based Bombé a few times now, so you should be somewhat familiar with his top-quality productions. For those who aren't, I'm planning on doing a profile on him in the next few days, so keep an eye out for that. He is still a relative unknown in the bass music world, which I find ridiculous, but I'm confident that he will blow up soon. This is a gargantuan percussive anthem with a very dark feel. Frightening and funky.

Nou by KRUEGER

Krueger is a Philly-based producer that I've only recently stumbled across. He labels his music as a mix between tropical and future bass, but I'm trying not to put music into sweet little categories anymore. The lines between genres are so blurred these days that to pigeonhole tunes takes something away from the brilliance of the music. This particular tune is like a sinister mariachi anthem of sorts. A sampled ragga vocal is tossed over thundering bass and a misleadingly sweet melody, and your ears and brain are pretty much reduced to rubble. So dope.

Savage Skulls - Caravan (Leo Justi Heavy Baile Mix) by Leo Justi

Like for a lot of people, Diplo was responsible for my first introduction to Baile Funk. While the hype and fervor surrounding the genre has pretty much died down, I started noticing baile vocals and influence creeping into a lot of house tracks. It has a very distinct hypnotic cadence that incites booty-shaking like almost no other genre. Leo Justi is a DJ/producer out of Rio de Janeiro whose remix of Savage Skulls/Tony Senghore collabo Caravan was featured on the most recent episode of the Sound Pellegrino podcast. Duke Ellington doing the dirty with pounding Baile Funk rhythms, now that's a great combo.

Bout The House (original) (Plant Music) by danceswithwhitegirls

Thug house is a movement. This is a forthcoming release on Plant Music that features acid house stylings and trademark Dances With White Girls vocals. His productions all have a great 'New York house' feel to them, and always make me think of a sweaty, drugged-up warehouse rave. It's about the house, y'all. Gospel music on extacy.

Pools VS Biggie - Can I Get Wetcha by poolsmusic

poolsmusic is a new collaboration project between L-A DJ Thee Mike B and San Fran DJ Morse Code. Honestly, their steez is pretty self-explanatory. It's a soundtrack to lounging around a pool. Of course, I'm having a really hard time relating to it, given that Montreal is blanketed in snow, but these looped giggles are giving me hope. Hurry the fuck up, spring. I'm fiending for warm weather. (Also, R.I.P to BIG, lest I forget)

On to other things:

Either one post a day isn't enough for you guys, or we're falling off, according to Google Analytics. Which is why we are going to try to post twice a day from now on, and we're trying to work on a 2.0 version of the site, an overhaul if you wish. The content and the swag shan't change, obviously. We're just going to make it a lot nicer to look at, a lot more varied, and make it easier for you to get around. Either way, that should be ready in the next month or so, if all goes according to plan.

I'm a glutton for reader participation, so I'm just throwing this out there: do you have any suggestions/things you'd like to see in the new version of Avenge the Virgins? Let us know in the comments.

OFWGKTA pt 8: Frank Ocean

I'll try my best to keep the chatter to a bare minimum today. As any regular reader will already know, I'm behind the movement 100 percent. My view on OFWGKTA has been rehashed over and over again, and I figure that there's not much point in repeating what's already been said 7 times, ya feel me?

Frank Ocean- swim good

Unless you live under a fucking rock, you will have noticed the complete and utter takeover of OFWGKTA of late. It's a rare thing when a group gets love from so many different scenes. The indie, electronic and rap worlds are collectively losing their shit to this stuff. Odd Future Wolf Gang has not only gotten shout-outs from Kanye, Pusha T (who even asked Tyler to send him beats), Pharrell, ?uestlove, Mos Def, Ciara, and many others, they've even been acknowledged by the one and only Justin Bieber. Tyler was tripping balls on twitter when it happened ahahah. Couple all of this with a highly publicized appearance on The Jimmy Fallon Show, and it's safe to say that OFWGKTA is one of the hottest acts in music at the moment.

Anyways, on to Frank Ocean.

Frank Ocean- novacane

I first heard of him when he did the hook on a couple of MellowHype's songs on their latest mixtape, BLACKENEDWHITE. I thought it was somewhat out of character to feature an r&b singer on an OF track, and that's probably why his new mixtape blew me away, because it really took me by surprise. I'm not usually into a lot of r&b, but this is some visionary shit. Remember, OFWGKTA isn't all about rape, mayhem & drugs. Jet Age of Tomorrow's got a lock on that stoner acid jazz shit, and Frank Ocean is one of the dopest r&b artists I've ever come across. Open your mind.

Frank Ocean sounds like what most people would consider r&b, but to put it in a bracket like that really wouldn't be fair. Personally, I just think that's he writes smooth songs that make you want to make romance/fuck, and the beats are fuckin' insane. He goes in over The Eagles, Coldplay and even MGMT. It's a sound that is reminiscent of old soul tunes, but is also firmly entrenched in modern/future r&b. I believe that they refer to this kind of music as timeless. Frank Ocean bleeds that Casanova swagger.

The description on the OF site pretty much nails it, though.

As with any group that is hyped up, there are legions of haters and disbelievers. Some people are taking offense to suggestions that Odd Future is the new Wu-Tang, but that's because they are taking that statement way too seriously. All we're sayin is that much like Wu-Tang, this is a collective of extremely passionate & talented rappers and artists who seem to have an endless supply of raw creative energy. Fuck the haters, this shit's exciting.

Grab Frank Ocean's great nostalgia, ULTRA mixtape below, free-of-charge as usual. This is definitely one of my favorite releases of 2011, and will probably be one of yours as well. Amazing vibes, great beats and a truckload of swag. Odd Future love songs, who would've thought?

OFWGKTA pt 7: Jet Age of Tomorrow

Here we are, we are on the last leg of our tumultuous journey. Odd Future Wolf Gang has been omnipresent in this space for quite some time, but alas, the segment ends tonight.

I was supposed to finish it last week, actually, but I forgot about the members of Odd Future that are behind-the-scenes. Besides OF in-house engineer Syd, Jet Age of Tomorrow/Super 3 are responsible for a big chunk of Wolf Gang beats.

Jet Age of Tomorrow- Can I Hold Your Hand?!

Matt Martians and Pyramid Vitra are the highly creative, highly experimental, highly tripped-out duo formerly known as Super 3, and now known as The Jet Age of Tomorrow. Their material sounds a bit different from most of the collective's stuff, but that's just because you're used to hearing spitting about dismemberment and vandalism over the beats. This is pure OFWGKTA creativity run wild, a group of forward thinking teens who are only limited by their imagination.



Beat4Clothes ft Tyler, The Creator- Rest Stop Flow (Matt Martians remix)

When I first downloaded their album off of the OFWGKTA site, I was expecting something totally different. Tyler dropped a word of warning that it was 'spaced-out and cosmic', but I was not ready for this shit. When I popped it into Itunes, it fell into the genre of Acid Jazz. What the fuck? What followed was a trippy journey into instrumental funk/jazz/hip-hop/funk/the future. Still, you can still hear the dopeness dripping out of your speakers when you bump it. That trademark Wolf Gang swagger, though not in its usual form, shines through.

You can download their album Voyager right below. This is definitely a sleeper of an album, but it grows on you a lot after a few listens. Cosmic acid jazz for the young reckless stoner/dreamer in all of us.

Journey To The 5th Echelon will be dropping on December 31st on the Odd Future site, so keep your eyes peeled for that. If these 4 preview tracks are any indication, the album is going to be massively rad.



And finally, I just want to shine a little spotlight on a young Californian rapper who I believe is affiliated with OFWGKTA, though not an official member. He shows up quite a bit on the first Odd Future tape and makes a few appearances in everyone's albums and mixtapes, but there is not too much mention of him on the Odd Future site. No clue why, to be honest. He probably reps OF but is off doing his own thing on the side, I suppose.

His name is Casey Veggies, a 17 year old rapper from California, and he's mighty dope. Scope out some of his material right here.



Casey Veggies- The Panties

Casey Veggies is another talented young gun who is unnaturally talented for his age. He is, as he puts it, "a young n***a with an OG flow", probably due to his extremely relaxed and confident demeanor. He's got a great handle on the metaphors, and isn't too obsessed with the posturing like a lot of rappers that are just getting in the game. Basically, dude spits like he has nothing to prove, even though he has everything to prove as he's just a young buck. His laid-back lyrics and smooth California vibe is probably what's going to put him ahead of a lot of his peers. Only time will tell, but he's definitely one to watch in the underground Cali rap scene.
