Melange: I

Let's be honest: Saturdays kinda blow. Most of us are recovering from the night before, and don't want to think too much. Saturdays are a day for chilling and lounging around, primarily. I've realized that we are usually too smashed to post anything on Saturdays, so I figured that I'd start up a very simple Saturday-only segment that'll be a lot easier for us to write and for you to handle. Forget about huge paragraphs and in-depth descriptions, people.

Melange is a weekly series that is retardedly simple: I'll post 2 older songs that I really enjoy, 2 videos that I've come across over the week, and 2 dope mixes that I've found. 6 pieces of audio/visual stimuli, for that one day of the week that you want to be entertained without thinking.

Avenge The Virgins fam & Source of Cool founder Mackpaye just released a new deep house/future bass mix for you guys. He says that it is great music to chill in your bath to. I'm inclined to agree. Dope shit once again, brotherman.

Best of the Rest vol 3

Good afternoon, crazy people. As promised, here is a beefed-up edition of Best of the Rest, to make up for the fact that I didn't post it last week. Instead of 5 songs, I've picked my ten favorite ones. Once again, this is a segment that features the most interesting tunes that we receive in the good ol' inbox. I definitely try to show more love to e-mails that are actually addressed to us, rather than songs included on mailing lists sent to 5000 different blogs.

Today's post is pretty much all over the place in terms of genres, to be honest. Hip-hop, experimental ambient, house, witch house and more get center stage. Hope you enjoy it.

1. TRRBO (Germany)

GLO004 Madeline Puckette - Everything Is Alright (TRRBO Remix) by TRRBO

TRRBO is the new project from Tim Turbo of Man Recordings, and this is his new remix that obviously draws quite a bit from the new wave of UK future garage. Whooping basslines, pitched female vocals, off-time claps, oh my!

2. Jay Fay (USA)

Jay Fay- Close

Jay Fay is a 17 year old producer/DJ out of St-Louis, Missouri. He cites Diplo, Crookers and NGUZUNGUZU as major influences, and his sound is pretty unique. A feverish love for snare drums and sweet bass are his calling cards. Keep an eye out for this young buck.

3.Zambian Astronaut (Scotland)

Zambian Astronaut-Mog Bump

ZambianAstronaut make what they call "Heavy Synth Hop", and work with a large variety of vocalists and producers. They are also well-known in the Edinburgh scene as very talented video artists. This particular tune is really trippy, with dope rhymes over a frantic electronic synth track. They've got a really interesting sound that I think you'll definitely get a kick out of.

4.Seiren (Belgium)

Seiren- Flower Shower

This is one of the more interesting submissions we've received. Seiren first reached out to us because of our love of Flying Lotus & Bibio, strangely enough. He describes his music as Instrumental Ambient/Darkstep/Breakbeat. This is actually not my favorite song off of his really interesting album Scoliosis (my personal fave is Kitaku, a slice of piano drone, but that may be because I am hungover), but it's probably the one that will gain him the most fans. Dope, and seriously out-there and experimental.

6. Foolk (Slovakia)

Foolk- White Rabbit

I know everyone hates the term glitch-hop, but it's honestly the first thing that came to mind the first time I played this. The bass is deep and crunchy, the hip-hop influence is felt in the drum programming and the Flat Beat wobbles are well placed. If you ever happen to be smoking chronic with a cyborg, this would be the backing track to that experience. Trippy.

7. Johnny Lawson (USA)

Mike Posner- Save Your Goodbye (Johnny Lawson remix)

This remix leans very heavily towards a simple house vibe, but I enjoy the simplicity of it. Johnny Lawson is a producer out of Chicago who makes an interesting blend of disco, house and mainstream pop. Light, warm-sounding and sure to make your local bottle service club go wild.

8. bauchaump (Switzerland)

bauchamp- LA BAGUETTE

What would happen if Mozart tried his hand at modern club music? I'm not sure I ever needed to know the answer, but bauchamp gave it to me anyways. Bloody strange, I must admit.

9. Void Pedal (USA)

Void Pedal- Looking Glass

Fun instrumental hip-hop breakbeats. Fun for the whole family. The synth lines that come in about half-way through are really dope. Phenomenal laid-back feeling in this one.

10. Hasan Insane (USA)

Theophilus London – Going Overseas ft. Solange Knowles and Dev Hynes x Sade (Hasan Insane Remix)

Hasan Insane is a producer out of New York who makes chilled-out refixes and blends. While this one doesn't diverge too much from the original, his low-key chopping and dropping, and blending the Sade vocals in is a great combo. Airport executive lounge vibes, son.

shhhhhh

A little bit of this, a little bit of that. My sleep schedule is really messed up. I apologize for the lazy post. A king-sized edition of Best of the Rest comin' tomorrow, I promise.

à demain, les amis.

Shyne & Fabolous- DJ Clue freestyle

Shyne, one of my favorite rappers, and Fabolous spitting over Da Rockwilder & a Scarface (the movie, not the rapper) track. Hot fiyah.

Wax Motif- Shimmy Shake (Christian Martin remix) [192kbps]

As heard on last week's Sound Pellegrino Podcast. A bouncy, tech-y call-and-response track. Subtle, but effective.

Hourglass Sea- Another World

Mix hip-hop grooves and a glitchy pace, and you have Hourglass Sea. This is definitely inspired by Hudson Mohawke, but I still really dig the vibe.

Lykke Li- I Follow You (Tyler, the Creator mix)

OFWGKTA. According to Tyler, Lykke Li's people actually asked him to do this remix of I Follow Rivers, which shows you how much Wolf Gang is blowing up. Couple that with him & Hodgy Beats appearing on Jimmy Fallon, (the video can be found on our facebook page), and Tyler getting signed to XL Records for a 1 album deal, and there you have it. Odd Future.

James Blake- A Case of You (Joni Mitchell cover)

His self-titled debut is earning rave reviews all over the board. While I really dig James Blake, his stuff sometimes makes me sleepy. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Meditative music is good, too.

Sparklers (ft. zora jones) by Sinjin Hawke

Sinjin Hawke + Zora Jones = Sexy music. It starts with nice synths and somehow turns into a footworkin' tune by the end of it. Sweet Dipset sample, too.

Armistice- Mission Bells

I'm a pretty much a Coeur de Pirate fan for life (Heh. Real heads know the deal), and I definitely enjoyed Jay Malinowski's solo album, so this one-off project definitely appealed to the sappy romantic soul in me. They released their self-titled EP on February 14th, and its cute pop vibe appealed to me a lot. Might not be everyone's cup-o-tea, but whatever.

Guts Le Bienheureux

Chilling mode has been activated. Sit back and relax.

Guts, a talented french musician, sure knows how to free your mind. He was introduced to music at a very young age. His mom used to give him a vinyl every week for being a good boy. That's some next level parenting right there. No question why he's so good.

It's always hard to compare a musician to others but I guess you could say his style is similar to Jay Dee, Pete Rock, Danger Mouse, RJD2, etc.
Dude has been working with legends(De La Soul) in the game and always been stepping his game up. Quality music fo sure.

Guts - Skunkfunk
Guts - Sweet Love
Guts - And The Living Is Easy

Back To Basics Pt. 7

Now with more colour!

Sheeeit little down time on Cal's and Brig's segments, but fear not I'm bringing back my once a decade segment. Seems like I feel the need to get into some of this good ol' hip-hop before going in to some human killing dubstep.

Man it's always good to come across some old Guru beat you've never heard before. Gang Starr affiliates Group Home are a hip hop duo which I had never heard of before. However, rest assured their music is tight and DJ Premier production skills are always on point.

KMD (aka Kausing Much Damage) was a nineties hip hop group infamous for the controversial cover on their second album Black Bastards. Once again another group I hadn't heard, but I soon came to realize that one of the members is now better known as MF Doom. Anyways both these songs are off their first album, Mr. Hood.

S.B. The Grindaholik - Bopperz On The Floor Remix

Oh yeah switching the hip hop style up and leaving you with some Oklahoma Gangster Rap. I still remember hearing this song in my friends car like 6 years ago, pretty sweet party anthem!

amour

Good evening, friends. While I realize that most of you shall not be reading this, as the holiday of romance surely beckons you elsewhere, either to a romantic supper of sorts with your loved one, or to some other brief passionate dalliance.

However, this post is for those of you who will need a little bit of background music to provide a soundtrack to your experience. Of course, if you leave our playlist on for too long, the next song after this post will be a DMX tune, so that might throw off the vibe somewhat. Actually, given that it will only go to DMX after about an hour and a bit of warm-up vibes...that just might work.

To quote Sebastien Tellier, "Making music that makes people want to have sex is what I wanted to do".

Tonight's tunes are best enjoyed with a glass of Merlot and a touch of sensimilla.

Love is on Your Side by Sinjin Hawke

This is damn fine vibe music. What a perfect amalgam of soulful melodies, pitched vocals and tremendous bass lines . Sinjin Hawke is a young, talented DJ/producer out of Montreal. This is a sexy-as-hell swagged out piece of lovestep that you need in your life. Decidedly tight stuff.

Art Nouveau & LOL Boys - Air France II by dementomori

Whoa. Two of my favorite producer duos have reunited to make magic for Art Nouveau's EP Air France. While the original Air France is more upbeat, groovy and straightforward house, I prefer the flip on Air France II. Inception-level dreamy vibes and a sweet vocal sample that is lifted from early nineties rave music combine to make something both ethereal and jukey. Footwork music for the soul, as it were. I'd really hoped to avoid this shitty pun, but you won't find a better tune to join the Mile-High Club to this year. Straight vibes. Check out the rest of the EP on Demento Mori's page, it's worth it.

Finally, I've included what is now becoming a tradition on this blog, meaning a post on ATV fam Grown Folk's monthly mix, the Grown Folk Collection. If you have not had the chance to check them out, I've included links to their first and second ones for your listening pleasure.

I had the pleasure of seeing Grown Folk play at Blue Dog this past friday, and while the rest of the night is a complete blur, I do remember their set being filled with sensual futuristic jams. Kid Aloha + Roledex, aka Drew & Brendan, are gaining quite a bit of recognition for their unique twist on the sound of the moment- the bass heavy hybrid of sexy house and r&b. Besides being signed to the Templar Sound label and being featured on Sound Pellegrino's prestigious Podcast series, they've been getting love from names such as Damu, STSQ, LOL Boys, Sam Tiba and more.

Grown Folk Collection N°03 features 2 fantastic new Grown Folk productions, and a great mix of upcoming releases and recent bangers. This is perfect mix of sensual upbeat house, futuristic UK-influenced bass sounds and techno grooves. A nicely interwoven web of the past, present and future of sexy synth sounds . Although I'm starting to sound like a broken record, I genuinely believe that Grown Folk is going to gain a lot of recognition in the music scene this year. Casanova crunk music, people. Get with it.
