Ironing out the kinks in this here blog. Winter is coming, which means that I'll have a lot more time to devote to actual features, instead of our practice of dropping clusters of songs, which seems to be our raison d'ĂȘtre these days.
In the meantime, more of the status quo. You know you love it.
Ah, of course. Vaguely depressing music, just in time for the first snowfall. For all of my constant praise of Montreal, my dislike of our winters runs deep.
A stellar meeting of some of New York's finest young talent. Azealia brings a heavy dose of her signature gattling gun glamour, 77klash peppers in a bit of his dancehall chatting and Machinedrum mixes it all together with his smooth futuresex vibes. All in all, a fanstastic collaboration.
Peter Peter is a very recent discovery of mine, a folk/pop artist from Montreal that sings in French. I bought his album after only seeing a few videos of him performing a few songs acoustically, and I must regrettably inform you that the CD's mastering is absolutely piss poor. The songs are still pretty sweet, but it sounds like poo, man. Peter Peter makes really depressing minimal pop music, with a touch of folky whispering included. This might not be your cup o' tea, but I enjoy it a whole lot.
Swedish House Mafia- Save the World (Style of Eye & Carli remix) (REMOVED BY REQUEST)
Yeah, I went there. This has probably been posted on everyone and their mother's blog, but given its undeniable summery anthem feel, I figured I might as well include it. This will probably rule the clubs, beaches and terrasses this summer, for sooth. Warning: May induce fist-pumps galore.
Block Beataz in this bitch. Besides Yelawolf & G.Side, I guess I haven't really been hearing too much about the Huntsville scene, but I still bump old PRGz & Slow Motion Soundz tunes on the regular. This was one of the more 'street' tunes that they released, a heavy trunk-rattling banger with an absolutely amazing beat. Mali Boi, who produces most of the Paper Route tunes, and raps on a few tunes, is nuts, and Big P.O.P.E still has one of the most unique voices in rap.
Diplo & Douster- ON! (REMOVED BY "REQUEST")
Again, this has been posted quite a bit elsewhere, but it's a really neat collabo between two of the dopest club DJs out there, so I just had to share it. Not really sure what to call this. Grunts, beeps, wild percussion and fart sounds make the club go wild.
Merci #basedgod. Waaaaaaaaaay too much (dare I say it...) swag for one tune. Thanks to Southern Hospitality for putting this together, really doe. Montreal x Bay Area. Lucky Me x Legendary Inc. Good x Lord.
This morning's post features brand new material from both Jim-E Stack and LOL Boys, as well as two free mixtapes from forward-thinking beat messiahs Clams Casino and Young L.
New Orleans based Jim-E Stack, as I've mentioned a few times, is one of my favorite new producers. His frantic productions are hard to describe, but they always feature unhealthy amounts of bass and hurricane-speed percussive sounds. Twisted, short, but so very on-point. Spring-loaded club music.

LA/Montreal house music duo LOL Boys have just released this phenomenal foray into the future for the new edition of Kick Out the Jam's mix series. This is a nearly an hour's worth of new and unreleased material from such names as Munchi, xxxy, Dubbel Dutch, Sinjin Hawke, Mackpaye and of course the LOL Boys themselves. I'm always on the look-out for more of their distinctive brand of dance music, so stumbling upon this new mix was quite a treat. Definitely looking forward to all of these releases!
Clams Casino is an amazing producer based in New Jersey who is most recognized as the mastermind behind a few of Lil B's #based classics, including I'm God and Motivation . He recently released this instrumental mixtape of his past productions, which features beats he did for Souljah Boy, Main Attraktionz, Squadda B, the Jealous Guys and Deezy D.
I wasn't too familiar with Clams Casino up until the point I heard this mixtape, but it has rapidly become one of my favorite instrumental hip-hop releases ever. I've been bumping these distorted dreamscape beats for the past few weeks and I'm still going hyphy to it. So solid. Grab the tape for free below.
Speaking of hyphy, one of my favorite groups during its brief heyday was The Pack. Of course, Lil B was the member who got most of the burn after hyphy died down, but the producer/rapper behind all of their beats, Young L, was my favorite member. He started off making all of their futuristic bangers on Fruity Loops, but has now moved on to Reason. As time goes on, his stuff gets a lot more bizarre and minimal, but it is extremely unique and dope. I've included an insane cut off of the mixtape, Conscious Minds, which samples Peter, Bjorn & John's Last Night. His music is dark, insane, and most importantly innovative. Grab the free swag below.
My cousin sent this over to me a few weeks ago, and I figured I'd throw it up. Ignition are a band from the South Shore of Montreal, a ragged bunch of 15-16 year olds who enjoy playin gigs and making solid rock music. I think this is a cover, but it was charming and catchy enough that I thought I'd share it with you.
Jan Driver is a talented producer out of Germany, who released this on Boys Noize Records recently. This absolute behemoth of a tune is a mix of jacking house, techno rhythms, and electro buildups. The bass and the melody are ridiculous haunting, and I don't believe that any mammal could resist grooving to this. Take my word for it.
Miike Snow, of course, are the shit. Some might say that they are overhyped, but I've been re-discovering their self-titled album. It's two years old, but the dreamy melodies and catchy hooks have aged well. Of course, the Felix the Housecat and the Sebastian Ingrosso and Dirty South remixes are surefire dancefloor obliterators, but I really dig the emotional vocals and the synth work in the original. And it's quite the fitting soundtrack to this morning, staring out of an 18th floor office building at the dark skyline of Montreal. Night shifts do have their perks.
Honestly, Brenmar is probably the producer that pops up the most in this space. Besides being a genuinely nice dude (then again, I only met him for like 15 minutes, but I digress), his material is getting exponentially more dope as time goes on. His productions are make-out music for the future, sensual stratosphere salvos that burn up any speaker, warm body or dancefloor within their blast radius.
Nuff said, really. The genius behind The Pack, the originator of the BASED sound, the self-proclaimed King of Fruity Loops, the mighty Young Legend. His raps may not be terribly on-point, but no one could rap on these bizarre future beats as well as he does. It just fits.
See you tomorrow, with the first LAID BACK SUNDAY of 2011.
