Laid Back Sunday #20

Sorry for the late post. I was quite occupied with work and I definitely had to check the Super Bowl. Green Bay Packers for the win, they really deserve it, big up.

As for tonight's edition of Laid Back Sunday, It will be "gangster" reggae oriented. For no particular reasons, I was listening to a lot of reggae in the past days so this results in me sharing with you guys some of the tunes I've been blasting. Hope you enjoy.

Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Mr. Evil, Elephant Man, Jagwa, Sizzla Kolonji - Gang War Riddim Medley
This track is pure joke. It almost features all of the biggest names in the reggae industry. This beat will get you pumped up.

Jah Cure ft. Rick Ross & Mavado - Like I See It
Following with a beat combining reggae artists Jah Cure & Mavado and officer Ricky Ross. This track definitely didn't get the attention it deserves, this shit is HOT.

Busy Signal - Cool Baby (Poirier Remix)
I had the misfortune of missing Ghislain Poirier's DJ set at Igloo Fest. He apparently destroyed the dance floor. No doubt about that, Montreal's local talent, G.Poirier is probably one of the best party DJ in the city. He gives this Busy Signal joint a "jungle beat" twist.

Elzhi - Where It All Begins (feat. Hodge Podge)
Couldn't let down my hiphop heads out there. This is an old Elzhi joint off one of his rare emcee tapes. Really stoked when I found this beat. It has that pure hip hop vibe to it.

Well, it's a grey and rainy mess here in Montreal. I don't know about you, but on these types of days, I prefer to listen to old tunes. There's something comforting about playing songs that you've bumped the living hell out of, I suppose. Not much to say today, besides enjoy.

Freeway- Goodbye
One of the most original love/breakup songs in the history of rap, as weird as that sounds. Freeway rides this unbelievably soulful sample so well that you can't help but listen til' the end.

SIS- Nesrib
Ah, my favorite house song of '08. Germany's maestro of rhythm, SIS, most known for his colossal hit Trompeta, is the creator of this hypnotic and soulful hit, which samples Vanessa Williams' The Right Stuff to amazing effect. This song still has the same effect on me that it did two years ago: I close my eyes, groove to the great beat and dance with reckless abandon (read: flail my arms around like a fool)

Clipse ft Jadakiss, Styles P & Roscoe P Coldchain- I'm not you, rapper
This is the song that really opened up my eyes to Clipse's lyrical prowess. Every single verse is amazing, honestly. Everyone comes correct, and the minimal Neptunes beat allows the lyrics to shine. The wave of "cocaine rap" is often vilified, and often deservedly so, for glorifying a lifestyle that creates social ills, but Malice's verse (the last one) is one of the first times I've ever heard a "coke rapper" be so self-aware and filled with regret. It will go down in history as one of the greatest verses ever, in my opinion, if only because it shows that not all rappers who rap about selling cocaine are unaware of its social effects and pitfalls. Classic.

Damian Marley ft Capleton, Stephen Marley & Drag-On- It was written
I might go slightly overboard with the Damian Marley tunes (I've already posted like 3 of them this year), but that's just because he's bloody awesome. I love reggae with all of my heart and soul, but I just can't listen to it during autumn and winter. Too fuckin' depressing, to tell you the truth. Well, summer is in its death throes, so here's to the last reggae song I'll listen to this year.

Serge Gainsbourg ft Jane Birkin- Je T'aime...Moi non plus
I am an avid fan of Serge Gainsbourg, and you should be too. If you want to know about under-appreciated geniuses of the twentieth century, he's someone you need to look into. Gainsbourg pour toujours.

We've got a whole lot of good stuff planned in the near future. We're working on making your Avenge The Virgins experience a whole lot more enjoyable. Thanks for stickin' around for the ride. We appreciate it.

Outkast ft Eightball & MJG- Throw Your Hands Up

This is an old classic, produced by Dungeon Family member Mr. DJ, who also produced many of Outkast's big hits (Ms Jackson, Art of Storytellin, B.O.B, The Whole World, and more). Given that we've had such a jaw-droppingly nice summer so far, I figured that unearthing this gem and sharing it with y'all would be the perfect complement to those afternoon BBQs and this great weather we all love. Everyone on the song brought their A-game, which is reflected in their amazing verses.

Drop The Lime- Tried by Sex Sax (Doc Adam Moombahton Edit)

I still have not gotten tired of Moombahton, strangely enough. This is a recent edit by Portland's Doc Adam. He smashes East Flatbush Project's Tried By 12 into one of the summer's biggest hits, Drop the Lime's huge Sex Sax, and makes some magic. Most Moombahton, of course, is just sloppily slowed down and pitched down dutch house, but Doc Adam's take on the whole trend is quite well done. Of course, I really like Sex Sax, so maybe I'm just biased. Regardless, this is a dope edit.

Stephen Marley ft Damian Marley & Buju Banton- Traffic Jam

Nothing says summer and sunshine like reggae music. I've been guilty of just uploading 2-3 year old tracks recently, but whatever. I'm a humongous fan of Junior Gong, and this is one of his best tunes, in my opinion. The beatboxing and thumping bass match the Marley brothers' effortlessly cool rhymes, and Buju Banton closes it off by(as usual) bigging up the 'erb. A solid mix of laid back vibes and great production.

I figured that I'd leave you guys with the videos for the original mix of Sex Sax, and for Traffic Jam. Drop the Lime's Sex Sax is chock full of cameos from minor New York celebrities like 77klash, Telli from Ninjasonik, Catchdubs and features Dirty South Joe as the mystery saxophone player. I, for one, really dig the look of the video, even if Drop the Lime does look a bit goofy doin' his little shuffle. As for the Traffic Jam video, well, it oozes Rastafarian swagger. One of my favorite videos, although it is a shame that they left Buju out of the video.

Lionel Richie & The Commodores- Night Shift

I didn't even know this song existed before I heard Freeway & Memphis Bleek spitting over it a few years ago. Since then, the original sample has become one of my favorite songs, probably because of the flip. Even though the original song has nothing to do with hustling, I associate this great soul classic with the image of a dark street corner in the 1970s. Go figure.

Scarface- The G Code

The song that made me realize that Southern rap is incredible. Weirdly enough, this was probably the most influential song for me when I first started listening to rap. Scarface is one of the top 5 lyricists of all time, and is unbelievably underrated. He has infinitely more street cred than most of the trapper/rappers of today, has been in one of the most influential rap groups of all time (The Geto Boys) and has released tons of classic albums, like The Diary, The Fix, Last of a Dying Breed, and more. This is street hip hop, with more lyricism and content than most of the so-called conscious rappers who constantly diss the South. Not only does dude rap his ass off and spit knowledge, he also moonlights as a producer. (Interesting fact: his cousin is the dude who sang "I can see clearly now", Johnny Nash. There must be something in the water in Houston.)

Steel Pulse ft Damian Marley- No More Weapons

Steel Pulse are legends in their own right (Get familiarrrr), and on this fantastic tune, they team up with personal fave Jr. Gong, the incredible Damian Marley. This is a balm for the soul, proper rock-steady Reggae music. This is the soundtrack to revolution, baby. The bassline is proper, and Damian Marley's verse is mindblowing as hell. Actually, this whole song is bananas. Praise Jah.

Manare- Pirog (Lazy Flow Summer Mix)
