Best of year lists? Favorite songs? Best live sets? Uh, why not. Normally I resist this kind of thing, and since most of you are going to skip this post, I might as well indulge.

Favorite song of the year: Probably Jacques Greene- Another Girl. It's definitely the one I've played the most often.

Best DJ set of the year: God, 2011 is kind of a blur. From what I can remember, there were two particularly memorable events for me. Salva, Shlohmo, LOL Boys & Azamat B at Blue Dog was on some next-level debauchery, and Round Table Knights at Igloofest was pretty swell, too. I'm sure I missed tons of other ones, but I was hitting the sauce pretttttty hard this year. Also, I worked way too much, so I missed tons of things I would have loved to hit, like Araabmuzik, Mutek and Canblaster. Oh well, 2012 is mine.

Best Live show of the year: Bon Iver at Metropolis, hands down.

Best new artist/album of the year: The Weeknd, and his Trilogy (House of Balloons, Thursday & Echoes of Silence). A definite game changer.

Producer to watch in 2012: Clams Casino. As Lex Luger was to 2011, Clams Casino will be to 2012. The blueprint is changing, folks.

Yeah, it's a pretty shitty list. I'm getting mentally ready for the post-apocalyptic destruction of my synapses this evening, and also at work, so you'll have to forgive me.

Oh, and by the way, ATV version 2 is just about ready. ;)

Twerk it out: Glasswork

Glasswork is a new project from Reims native Andrea, formerly of the much-loved house duo Art Nouveau. I've had my ear to the grindstone ever since they announced the dissolution of the project, as I was a big fan of their music, and knew that they wouldn't just stop making music completely.

Glasswork has released a few screwed-up edits so far, which you can check out on his soundcloud, but he sent over this brand new production, a housy marvel called Unfinished Love.

Simple and sweet, Unfinished Love has a great mix of vibes, featuring chandelier-shaking toms and a sweet hands-in-the-air synth melody. It's a very promising debut from a young producer who has already proven his mettle (to me anyways).

Gucci Vump, the collabo between Reims' golden boy Brodinski and Guillaume from The Shoes, is back with a brand new mixtape. Called NVTHIN BVT A GUXXI THANG, it diverges quite a bit from their usual M.O. of trippy house music. I've read several interviews in which Brodinski professes his love for hip-hop, and his desire to make beats for rappers. He's been releasing his Best of Everything series for a while now, and has also given away a whole slew of Chopped-and-Screwed rap edits, so it was only a matter of time before an album of Hip-hop beats came out.

It is finally here.

Abel Tesfaye, the insanely talented artist known as The Weeknd, has just unleashed Echoes of Silence, the final release of his trilogy of free albums.

Following the game-changing House of Balloons and the hectic Thursday, we are introduced to the dark, foreboding Echoes of Silence. This is mystical hangover music that is still undeniably sexy. It has a lot more seratonin-draining introspective jams, which I am definitely not mad at. Quite honestly, this is some of the best drug music to be released this decade. Love him or hate him, The Weeknd is one of the most innovative and enigmatic musicians to emerge in quite a while. Whether at a party, during sex, at an afterparty or on the day-after, The Weeknd's music is always appropriate.

Here is a little glimpse into Echoes of Silence, but I recommend that you download the whole release and listen to it in its entirety. It is pretty much perfect, and Avenge The Virgins approved.

I'm not one for Best Of Year lists, but if I had to endorse one release this year, it would definitely be House of Balloons. It's the album that has gotten the most burn from me, and I'll go as far as to call it a classic. Maybe it's a lifestyle thing, but that thing has been the soundtrack to my life in 2011. Echoes of Silence is a phenomenal release as well, and very much worth your time.

#seapunk is one of the most interesting scenes I've ever had the pleasure of discovering. It's like a frankenstein mash of PLUR rave culture, online messageboard imagery, LOL Boys-esque vibes and gargantuan bass overloads.

I'm guessing the parties get a bit weird. It's all gravy, though. Blue mohawks, aquatic imagery, MDMA and sex aren't exactly a bad combination.

I realize that today's post is not too cerebral. I didn't sleep very well. You guys oughta loosen up a bit. Enjoy the vibes.

Twerk it out: Bongiovanni

Putting up one post a day until New Year's Eve seems like a pretty honorable endeavor, don't you think? Now, I could make up a million excuses as to why we haven't been posting too much, but it all boils down to one: Life gets in the way. To properly experience club/dance music, you can't just stay in your room with headphones. Gotta hit the streets.

Anyways, back to our regular scheduled programming. Let's get it.

Today's post focuses on a young rising star in the Montreal dance music scene: the titan of twerk, Bongiovanni.

We've been trying to post as many of his new tunes as possible, as you may have noticed. His releases thus far have been right up my alley and I really cannot resist sharing them with you. He taps into the darker, carnal, vibier side of house music for inspiration, and the end result is something decidedly fresh and sexy. Although I've yet to hear one of his tunes on the dancefloor, I imagine the effect to be pretty magical. Bongiovanni is definitely a producer to keep your eye on in 2012. And if you don't know, now you know.

Today, he blesses us with two new tunes, Baby I Ain't Buggin & Worldwide. Candle-lit caves and coked-up raves. Some of the freshest vibes coming out of Montreal at the moment. Bongiovanni is a badman.

Freddie Gibbs - Cold Day In Hell

Those of you who have been following this blog for some time are quite aware of my Freddie Gibbs "addiction". The guy keeps on releasing straight heat and his latest mixtape "Cold Day In Hell" is another one to add to his, already, extensive record.

In an overall perspective, great productions, as per usual with Mr. Gibbs. The album features big names such as : Young Jeezy, 2 Chainz, Juicy J (the dude is everywhere), Freeway & Dom Kennedy (remember Watermelon Sunday ?). No wonder why this has been quoted as "the definitive mixtape fans have been asking for". Peep my hand picked singles.

As promised, here is the short feature on San Jose beatsmiths Me Gusta, a supremely talented duo that are releasing some of the finest instrumental hip-hop in recent memory.

Sean Paul Richards & Dominic Lopez first started collaborating in 2008, and shortly thereafter started releasing beats as Me Gusta. The California sun and demeanor can definitely be felt in all of their productions. Hazy chops, blunted-out basslines and random samples are masterfully mixed together by the duo. They've released most of their tunes for free on their soundcloud and bandcamp pages, so you should definitly bookmark them if you dig the vibes.

I've definitely become a pretty big fan of theirs over the past few months, for obvious reasons. From weeded-out videogame-sampling anthems to speaker-rattling hip-hop jams, Me Gusta always brings the heat. Hope you dig it.

Damn, this dude is on fire. Another phenomenal track from Montreal producer Bongiovanni, part of the Booty Bakery crew. After releasing his fantastic edit of My Love a few weeks ago, Bongiovanni is back with another heater.

Know a Thing Or 2 is pretty much the distillation of pitched passionate perfection. Laid-back, smokey vibes are the flavour of the day.

From what I've heard of this dude's production so far, he definitely has a promising path ahead of him. Show some love to Montreal's underground.

AtV presents vol 2: Bombé (Us)

The second installment of our long awaited mix series is finally here.

Volume 1 was released way back in April, so we figured it was time to rekindle your love affair with Avenge The Virgins, just in time for the holidays.

After Azamat B's amazing ballroom mix introduced us to the AtV mix series, we knew we had to enlist some top shelf talent to make the second edition as phenomenal as the first.

One of the first people to come to mind was one of our favorite producers, the always stellar Bombé. For those not familiar with the name, we will be more than glad to introduce him. Bombé, formerly known as Kid Queasy, is a titan in the Philly bass scene. He has been producing subwoofer-decimating bangers for a few years, yet has criminally flown under the radar for some reason.

However, in June, he collaborated on a one-off project with fellow Philly DJ Mr Carribean, and they dropped a mixtape called James Drake. To put it lightly, it took over the blog world by storm, getting featured on such influential sites like Pitchfork, Prefix and FACT. A mash-up/blend album featuring (you guessed it) James Blake and Drake, James Drake was a huge success, mainly due to Bombé's mixing and ear for detailed soundscapes. I believe that it now has something like 95 500 plays on soundcloud, which is no mean feat.

All that aside though, the main reason that we are such huge fans of Bombé, for lack of a better explanation, is his absolute mastery of dark, sexy vibes. He's pretty much the sensei of bass, and one of the more innovative producers in the game. I find it very hard to describe his sound, which is always a plus. People first started categorizing it as future bass, but his sound has evolved so much that it is impossible to pigeonhole. A delicate mix of all of the darker elements of grime, 2step, house and techno, Bombé's tunes trigger something nefariously hedonistic within our hearts and spike seratonin levels off the charts.

Chandelier Crunk (disclaimer: Bombé did not come up with this name. Yours truly, on an MDMA hangover, did. I think it fits, though.) is an eerie plunge into the darker side of dance music. Featuring hypnotic selections ranging from Ifan Daffyd, Richelle, FaltyDL, NGUZUNGUZU and more, it is a 48 minute journey into the recesses of our minds. Chandelier Crunk transcends genres, but will still make you two-step without realizing it. Vibe and image wise, it evokes a mixture of a subterranean rave, a drugged-out loft party and a shamanistic ritual. Regardless of the setting, if this is played in a dimly lit room, the energy will get primal, very quickly. Orgiastic opium overtones, to put it simply.

Waka Flocka Flame, contrary to what a lot of people might think, is fucking AWESOME. Get a few drinks into me and I'm BOW BOW BOW-ing all over the place. Sinjin Hawke is an ATV fave, so this makes this bootleg much more sweet. Top shelf dopeness.

This tune was the precursor to my Saturday night, which turned out to be all kinds of epic. A few friends and myself hit up this legendary afterparty, complete with interactive light shows, pyramids with changing faces, a military net over the dancefloor and people in Arabian Nights styled tents. It sounds cliche, but I can't really describe it accurately. Trust me, it was insane. MDMAwesome, indeed.

Subvader has been on our list of Producers To Watch for quite some time. His mad scientist swagger has definitely kept us guessing and looking forward to the otherwordly sounds he seems to conjure out of thin air.

A few days ago this talented producer from Ann Arbour blessed us with a whole bunch of new material, and was kind enough to let us share this absolute monster of a track with you, our dear readers.

Subvader-Glass Roof

Glass Roof fits loosely under the hypnotic pendulum of what we call techno. It mutates several times over the course of four minutes, becoming ferociously rhythmic, subdued, jubilant and bleak, oftentimes all at once. The fact that this tune would work as well in a grimy warehouse rave as it would in a posh rooftop afterparty speaks volumes about Subvader's versatility and creativity. Radness personified, no matter the setting. His new productions are bottled insanity, you should really keep an eye out.

Spank Rock- Put that pussy on me (Gloze remix)

Gloze is a Montreal producer who sent us a few of his remixes last week. He has a penchant for ethereal hip-hop beats and hazy electronica. While most of the tunes are really tight, this one fit today's theme the best. Nice little take on one of my favorite tunes.

DJ MikeQ- nuCunt

Ballroom as a scene is starting to get a lot more notice, and I couldn't be happier. Our first Avenge The Virgins mix, mixed by Azamat B, had an extremely heavy ballroom/vogue influence, and I'm definitely a fan of anything remotely ballroom-minded. This particular one, premiered by The Fader, is off of MikeQ's debut on Fade to Mind, Kingdom's new label. nuCunt is a next level sexed-up banger of a tune.

DJ Fresh & DJ Jay Hood- Ass Ass

Weirdly enough, the start of my obsession with electronic music was during the start of the Baltimore Club & Baile Funk wave 6-7 years ago. I therefore have a huge weakness for raunchy repetitive club music with a lot of bass. This one is serioussssss.

Often quoted as an influential rapper, Eminem is one of the many who mentioned how much he admired Masta Ace. Disposable Arts was released in 2001 and is filled with classics. Remember back in September when I announced that Sinjin Hawke would be releasing his debut EP on the terrific Belgian label Pelican Fly?

Well, the preview dropped yesterday, and it's everything we anticipated and more. The Lights EP (FLY005) is an 8 track opus that is sure to tear the game up as soon as it drops.

He sent it to me 2 weeks ago, and I couldn't wait for the opportunity to share this amazing release with you guys. The soundcloud preview that Pelican Fly uploaded plunges us head-first into the mind of this Canadian expat, now currently living in Barcelona. His debut EP features some of the dopest club music of 2011.

From otherwordly subwoofer-exploding anthems, to memorable synth crescendos, to spoken-word serenades, The Lights has a bit of something for everyone. From what I can ascertain, the reaction to the preview is already overwhelmingly positive, and I'm sure that many of Sinjin Hawke's new tunes will be rinsed thoroughly by DJs for months to come.

In short, this is a phenomenal debut from one of the most promising young producers in dance music. P-p-p-pelican Fly.

Good evening, folks.

Those who have been reading this blog for a while may recognize the name sibian&faun, a great electronic music duo from Montreal. We profiled them back in February, and have been following their power moves ever since.

However, today's post is dedicated to 1/2 of sibian&faun, a very talented producer who goes by the name of Xavier Léon.

When I saw the list of participants in this year's Red Bull Music Academy (which is ridic, by the way), I was stoked to see that Xavier had been accepted. He's already released a preview of a collaboration with Italian producer Broke One which you can check out on his soundcloud.

Today's featured song is a extremely solid and sexy piece of music called Movin On. Léon's work with sibian&faun dipped heavily into futuristic-sounding r&b vibes, and his solo work continues the tradition. Xavier Léon's choice of samples is pretty fantastic, and he excels at heartwrenching, bass-heavy dance music. I'm definitely a very big fan of his unique sound, and hope you'll show him a lot of support if you do too.

Codeine Promethazine has reached the shores of Montreal, in a major way.

The drugged up, syruppy vibes that seems to be leaking from our producers' pores recently is definitely a good look. Either we're finally getting hook-ups for some potent lean (and if so, please inform your friendly neighborhood ATV), or our chronic is getting a lot stronger.

Compton Chic- inertia: tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged

Today's featured producer goes by the name of Compton Chic. I know next to nothing about her, to be quite honest. She reached out to us a while back, sending us a youtube link of her Frank Ocean refix, and nothing else. After a bit of sleuthing, I found her soundcloud page and ascertained that she was a Montrealer. I dug the swag, so I figured she needed a bit more exposure.

Compton Chic's forte seems to be heavily blunted, gloriously chopped up r&b edits. Although they may be simple, her reworks are sexy, trippy and effective. There's quite a few more on her soundcloud page, which I've linked below, so if you dig the vibes, please give her a bit of love.

Tonight's featured song comes to us courtesy of Bongiovanni, a local DJ who has been steadily gaining recognition over the past year. Although I have never seen him DJ, I have heard good things about his sets, but it came as a surprise to hear that he also produced. So when he reached out to ATV to promote his newest edit, I had to share it with you. From what he told us, Bongiovanni used to make hip-hop beats and housier edits, but his sound seems to be evolving into something pretty great. You can definitely feel the sexy, gritty, two-steppy vibe that Montreal seems to naturally inspire.

His edit of My Love is a hit through and through. His chopped up and dropped out take on the classic tune is really refreshing. The mp3 is low quality for now, but you guys should keep an eye on his soundcloud, his production work is getting exponentially better.

Checkin in: Mackpaye

If you've been a regular follower of Avenge The Virgins for the past few years, you will have come across the fine stylings of Reims' rising star, Mackpaye.

Since we've been so fucking dormant for so long, we've kinda missed out on putting on dope tunes when they get released. Regardless, there's no expiry date for great music.

Let's get reacquainted with some of the remixes you may have missed.

First off, we have a great, synth-heavy house refix of frequent Neptunes collaborator Kenna. Mackpaye's strengths lie in making memorable, melody-driven house music; remixes and originals that remind you of champagne-soaked loft parties that last until the early morning. This remix of Chains fits Mackpaye's modus operandi to a T, and considering he has yet to make a bad tune, that's not a bad thing.

Second on the list is one of my favorite remixes by Mackpaye. Equal parts acid/techno/electro/whatever, it is one of his heaviest remixes yet, sure to get play in any peak-hour set. It is wild, energetic and deliriously addictive, and I'm pretty bummed that I didn't get to show this to you sooner.

BH002: DJ Funeral- Last Breath EP

I've been a big fan of LOL BOYS and SamoSoundBoy for a serious minute, so when I heard that the Los Angeles natives were starting a label called Body High, I knew it was going to be pretty tight.

Body High has dropped one EP so far, the debut release by DJ Dodger Stadium (a collabo between Jerome Potter of LOL BOYS and SamoSoundBoy), called the Stadium Status EP. LOL Boys & SSB are quite well known for their love and mastery of wild rhythm and percussive club music, and the Stadium Status EP definitely reflects that. You can check out a few snippets on the label's soundcloud page, which is linked at the end of the post.

The Last Breath EP, produced entirely by the mysterious DJ Funeral, is the second release by the promising young label, and it is slated to be one of the most talked-about releases in quite a while. Completely unclassifiable in any known genre, Last Breath will feature (from what I can ascertain from this 5 minute preview) a double-time jumbie rave anthem, a booty clapping jam with terrifying percussion and what I can only describe as R&B on a heavy dose of Ayahuasca.

The EP is dropping at midnight on the 31st of October, and will be available for purchase online from most of your local crack peddlers. Keep your eye on their soundcloud, big things are in store.

The Weeknd x DROPXLIFE

Toronto is boiling hot these days. Following The Weeknd/Abel Tesfaye's meteoric rise to fame, and his XO crew's affiliation with Drake's OVO (October's Very Own) collective, people have been paying a lot of attention to Canada's biggest metropolis. Not only is Drake absolutely killing it lately, but a lot of the r&b and electronic music coming from Toronto is of the highest quality.

I have personally played The Weeknds's debut mixtape House of Balloons more than any other release this year, but I was a bit dissapointed by the muddled follow-up Thursday. Regardless, I'm willing to give his future releases a chance, based on the strength of his debut mixtape.

Two days ago, Tesfaye dropped a new song, his most drugged-out and distorted piece to date, called Initiation.

The Weeknd- Initiation (produced by DROPXLIFE)

The release of Initiation introduces us to DROPXLIFE, a mysterious producer from Toronto who is part of the OVOXO umbrella group. For many, this is our first introduction to this new talent. He specializes in chopped-up, dropped-out, bass-heavy jams, which is the perfect complement to The Weeknd's syruppy serenades to debauchery.

I've included the title track of his debut mixtape ALLXLEGENDS, as well as a download link so you can jam it on your ipods and stereos. Between this and Rustie's album (OMFG so good), fans of dope instrumental vibes have been pretty spoiled recently.

DROPXLIFE's debut is pretty sweet, to be quite honest. Mellow, trippy and heavy at the same time, a few songs are reminiscent of a mix of Portishead and a really strong MDMA trip.

Good afternoon, everyone.

My work schedule is a bit ridiculous these days, but I have several great posts lined up for you in the coming days. I've really missed posting, so I'm trying to put expotentially more effort into the site. We'll see how that goes.

Anyways, today's post will be a double-whammy of awesomeness. We have a great deep tune by Dutch producer Peter Horrevorts and a several weeks old BBC Radio 1 Essential mix, mixed by none other than the rising star himself, Jamie xx.

To be honest, my introduction to this tune came from listening to the Essential Mix posted below. It is an extremely solid mix, filled with amazing tunes, but this was one of the tunes that caught my attention and made me do a double-take. Of course, I had to click through the mix to locate it in the lengthy tracklist.

Peter Horrevorts, a producer from the south of Holland, has been releasing sublime techno for the better part of a decade. I had personally never heard of him until a few weeks ago, but the few tracks that I have heard so far are admittedly great.

Siren is a hypnotic slow-burner of a track, a magical piece of very deep house. It starts with a dreamy buildup of enchanting rhythm, then the bass and vocal sample are dropped into the mix, which leads to gape-jawed wonder for the rest of the nearly 10 minute adventure. I'm not a connoisseur of deep house, unfortunately, but this one is most definitely one of the prime cuts of the year.

Jamie xx Essential Mix by Young Turks

The xx's production whiz and much-hyped DJ, Jamie Smith, aka Jamie xx, has had a great year. His Gil Scott-Heron rework is one of my favorite remixes of 2010, his steel drum opus Far Nearer was one of the summer's best tunes, and his edits have been rinsed by many an influential DJ.

I was pretty stoked when I heard that he had done an Essential Mix, which is always a great platform for up-and-coming producers to show off their skills. I won't say too much about the mix today.

Just put it on the stereo and let yourself be transported and moved by the vibes. Anything goes with this one: disco, UK Bass, soul, and more.

What was your reaction to the mix? Personally, I cleaned up my whole appartment whilst two-stepping to it, and it was the perfect soundtrack. That might not be the most flattering or preferable way to review a mix, but I'm a fan. He was pretty great at Osheaga this summer, too.

We've just received this in our inbox today from Jordan, one half of the amazing Parisian duo STSQ.

Today, we introduce you to Homan, his solo side-project and will hopefully have a lot more of his productions to share with you in the coming months.

Everything is an extremely solid debut original production, which should come as no big fucking surprise, given that STSQ's output has always been very good, although we haven't heard enough of it. Today's featured song is an instantly memorable house tune with an injection of garage right into the jugular. It features epic key stabs and frantic percussion, and is heavy enough to warrant inclusion in any peak hour house set. The seductive, pitched vocal sample and the rolling bass is what gets to me, though. Good lord, what a tune.

Homan also remixed Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team's Bassface. It is has a more atmospheric vibe than his other song, but it is still quite tight. Hope you dig it!

La Big Familia: Familia Jam vol1 PROMO

La Big Familia is a collective of top-tier producers and DJs from the south of France. They regularly release mixtapes and put together debauchery-filled events all year long.

Today's post features the promotional mix for the first volume of their free compilation series, entitled Familia Jam, which is dropping this Saturday. 10-01-2011 will be a date to mark down on your calendar for sure, as it features 9 brand new original productions & remixes.

My introduction to La Big Familia came from hearing a few tunes from Raziek and Mago on some blog a while ago. After that, I met Laurent, aka Azamat B, also a member of LBF, who did our first Avenge the Virgins mix, and I started to investigate their work a bit further. I must say, these dudes have their fingers directly on the pulse of club music.

While club music (and by club music, I mean the kind of bass-heavy double-time dance music that sounds like frontline artillery) was undoubtedly birthed in inner-city Baltimore, Chicago and their surrounding areas, it has a huge fanbase across the Atlantic. I have been hearing a whole slew of fantastic club hits from producers from France and the UK for years. Baltimore club, juke, and all of the related club sounds all share a common love for classic breaks, 808 claps and snares and monstrous bassy kicks, and it's nice to see this formula incorporated in new ways. The modern wave of tunes, concocted and rinsed by collectives such as La Big Familia, sound familiar yet unquestionably new and refreshing.

La Big Familia is keeping the club torch brightly lit, and from what I've heard of their material so far, they've only just started to make their mark. I've been told that the beach parties they throw are pretty epic, so if you're ever in the South of France, you should definitely scope them out. Anyone who can play a set of Gucci Mane songs mixed with uptempo club anthems is fine by me.

Anyways, enough chatter. Just put this on a good system, or plug in great headphones, and wile out. C'est mortel.

Alright, fuck this hiatus bullshit. I'll dive right back into it. Enough of the excuses.

Long-time readers of the blog, and pretty much anyone with an ear for great music will have heard of today's featured producer.

I met Sinjin Hawke when he first started the now infamous Boomclap parties in Montreal. Since then, he's gotten married and permanently relocated to Barcelona. I'm guessing the beautiful weather has been treating him well, because all of the music he's released since moving has been exceptional. Every time I saw him DJ, he always had a penchant for r&b and juke with a monstrous amount of bass, and his new remixes definitely reflect this. We've featured pretty much every single song he's ever released on Avenge The Virgins, and today I'd like to introduce you to a few of his newer productions. The Cuizinier one in particular is really sick, as the heavy drum fills and throbbing bass fuse together so perfectly.

Once I heard that Sinjin Hawke would be collaborating with one of my favorite labels, the forward-thinking Pelican Fly, and will be releasing his much-anticipated (and long overdue) first EP, I must admit that I was beyond stoked. If you haven't heard of Sinjin Hawke by some stroke of misfortune, here's your chance. Dude's got a crazy ear for production, is a skilled DJ, and all-around nice guy. Show some support. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Sinjin Hawke is one of the top 10 producers you should keep your eye on in the coming year.

Nothing too fancy tonight, just a jumble of songs and videos that I've been digging recently. Most have been posted all over the internet, but I'm not one to be a whore to exclusivity.

Girls- Honey Bunny

I was lucky enough to get to see Girls perform at the Corona Theatre in Little Burgundy this past Sunday, as part of the great Pop Montreal festival. I've been a huge fan since their debut album Album was released, and I've seen their popularity skyrocket since then. People really warm up to their delightfully earnest pop ditties and awkward love songs. If you like drugs and instantly memorable melodies, you're not going to find a better band to match that ambiance. Their new album Father, Son, Holy Ghost, which was released two weeks ago, is definitely worth your time.

A$AP ROCKY- Peso

Manhattan's A$AP ROCKY is one of the first rappers in a looooooooong-ass time to make me pay attention to New York's hip-hop scene. His southern-influenced swagger is fresh and exciting, and is giving me faith in a scene that has egotistically self-cannibalized itself for the past 10 years. He's been working with San Francisco's Main Attrakionz and LA's spaceghostpurrp, and I must say I'm stoked to hear what will follow. Say what you want to say about the movement, but the based sound is taking over. The new wave of hip-hop producers like Clams Casino, Keyboard Kid, Young L and more, are producing spacey, ethereal masterpieces, and A$AP ROCKY is one of the first rappers to actually have potential to break through. His smooth baritone works well on these beats, and he has made some of my favorite rap videos this year. A$AP will take over in 2011-2012, buh-lieve that.

Coeur de Pirate- Adieu

New CdP! I will always be a fan of Béatrice Martin's sweet pop music. Her new album blonde, will drop in November, and this is the first single. I dig the evolution in style that is quite evident in this tune. Her usual melancholic piano music is getting slightly more upbeat, although the themes haven't changed much. Haters are gonna hate, but I dig it.

This high-octane smash of a tune by the fierce Azealia Banks, straight out of Harlem, has been in heavy rotation in my house for the past week. I've included the spellbinding video, filmed by Montreal's own Johnny F. Kim, which features cameos by Jacques Greene & Lunice.

I tire very quickly of hyper electronic/rap hybrids, but Miss Banks brings a healthy amount of swagger to 212, so I really help but dig it. Hopefully you will too.

Hands down best example of this is in his song "Arrest the President" released on his first album Intelligent Hoodlum, produced by none other than the great Marley Marl.

It's nothing new, I know that alright, but I've been meaning to share this Мишка X Club Cheval mix since mid-june. The style is right up our allay as usual (R'n'B'/Hip-Hop into some electro). The slickest work in this mix for me is the simple speed up of John Blu's track, perfection.

One more thing to point out about this mix are the two exclusives (which were new back in the day) from Myd's Octodip EP. This is some seriously innovative material. I'm a sucker for peculiar sounds thrown around together and he layers that shit on harder than a photoshopped picture for a cosmetic ad.

No, we're not dead. Barely hanging on, but not completely expired.

We've been at war with our hosting company, meaning that they wouldn't allow us to access our server and have been cutting off access to important files, so that was a main reason for the hiatus. We're going to try to change hosting companies and make the switch over soon, but it has definitely been a big-ass hurdle.

As well, I've just spent the weekend moving into a new appartment, and have yet to install the internet, so it is making my posting somewhat impossible. I imagine that my colleagues are as busy, but I uploaded a few files before the move, so I'll be able to throw up a few posts this week.

Today's post will focus on a few songs that I've been bumping the hell out of these past few weeks. I know Drake gets a lot of hate, but recently, he's been drinking an epic amount of codeine and has been running with The Weeknd's Abel Tesfaye, so his sound has altered a lot. I definitely dig his new hazy, drugged-out take on r&b, and I'm sure you will too.

Guess who's back?

Everything's supposed to be back to normal now. We've just had to remove the most insanely random songs from our server, because of our host's demands. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason behind the songs they forced us to remove, as most are available on several other blogs, but if it means we can continue to feed the masses, then so be it, I'll take 'em down.

To celebrate the fact that we won't imminently perish, I've posted a few smooth tunes and one oldie thrown in for good measure.

The Morning (Prince Club Edit) - The Weeknd by Prince Club

This is a fantastic edit by local house heroes Prince Club. The original version of The Morning, a somewhat upbeat hangover anthem by The Weeknd, isn't too altered by the Montreal duo (hence the title of edit and not remix), but they make it slighly more groovy and smooth. Whereas most of The Weeknd's songs are pretty much the soundtrack to a drug-fueled hotel suite party, this take on The Morning would definitely fit in an early evening club set. Actually, it'd probably work great in an after-hours set too, as the sun starts to rise. Sexy, emotional and effective. Montreal is kicking ass at music these days, as I'm sure you've noticed.

Juvenile- Get Ya Hustle On

I found an old CD of mine a little while back, and had to take a trip down memory lane. While this classic tune is very period-specific, its message still resonates. I'm pretty sure that they still have not finished rebuilding the poor, disaffected areas of New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina hit, and it's been 6 years.

The Dream - Fancy (Sinjin Hawke Club Fix) by Sinjin Hawke

Sinjin Hawke, a former Montrealer, has now relocated to Barcelona, but he's still releasing phenomenal material. We've profiled him before, and posted quite a few of his tunes, so you should be familiar with his brand of deep, soulful dance music. Last time I talked to him, he mentioned that his plan was to lock himself in a room and produce as much music as he could for a solid year. The original tune, Fancy, is one of my favorite songs (and I've even posted the original a few months ago), so it was a VERY welcome surprise to stumble across this gem.

I realize that I've posted two The Dream songs in 2 days, but that's because I think he is one of the tightest producers/artists in music. His creativity knows no bounds, and he's made some of the greatest lovemaking music since Prince was in his prime. That's a heavy statement, but I stand by it. Trust me, put on any of his CDs when you're with your missus or man, and you'll see what I mean.

La Patère Rose- Duet Tacet

This final tune is incredibly sappy, but I'm totally unabashed about my taste for sweet love songs, as I'm sure you've noticed. I also post gangster rap and dirty house music on the regular, so I figure that posting this stuff once in a while gets a pass, ha. This tune, from the now defunct Québec-based electro-indie trio La Patère Rose, is a recent obsession. The lead singer, Fanny Bloom, is pursuing a solo career, and the two other members are focusing on their main project, the electro-jazz group called Misteur Valaire.

You know, I might have a serious weakness for cute girls who play piano and sing sad romantic pop songs. They are my Achilles heel, I swear to god.

As I'm sure you've noticed, we haven't posted in quite some time. This is due to a litle internal struggle with our hosting. We're trying to sort out the issue as soon as possible, and we appreciate the fact that some of you are still checking out the site daily.

For the next little while, I'll only be posting soundcloud links, and our banner+images will not show. Ugly, fuck yeah.

The original tune has been a favorite for a while now, and I was pretty ecstatic when The Dream decided to jump on it. Grown Folk's solid bootleg of it adds a lot of flavor to the great 3am baby-making grindathon that it is.

Jim-E Stack- Lemme (REMOVED BY "REQUEST")

Brand new tune from New Orleans' resident maniac, the one and only Jim-E Stack. Every single one of his productions are fresh to death, and this one is no exception. Wild hedonistic rhythms and insanely tripped out samples are his modus operandi, and no one really produces anything that sounds quite like his tunes. He's also pretty darn good at DJing, so check him out if he rolls through your town, it shan't disappoint.

Machinedrum- Swagfuneral (Low Quality rip)

Sorry. Machinedrum is one of the sickest producers in the game, and I must applaud the fact that he, like many of us, is getting tired of the word "swag" being overused. This is a low quality rip of his funeral dirge. Lunice likes to start off his shows with this thing, and I figured you might dig it, at least as a conversation starter. (Yes, I use the word swag all of the time. I'm trying to stop, but for now, I'm part of the problem)

DJ Javier Estrada- Baile Swag

Javier Estrada is so unbelievably boss. This young producer from Monterrey is blowing up and receiving mountains of praise from all over the globe. He started producing his own take on Tribal Guarachero called 'prehispanico', but has started to incorporate a lot of crazy sounds and influences into his music as of late, like Moombahton and cumbia. Hit up his soundclound for more goodies, he's mighty prolific, and his tunes are bound to turn any summer party into a sweat-drenched display of debauchery.

Crooked Lettaz ft Pimp C- Get Crunk

Before David Banner was whispering dirty things into your ear, he was a half of a duo called Crooked Lettaz. Their album Grey Skies is a bona-fide Southern classic. This is probably my favorite cut off of the album, an absolutely amazing street gospel tune featuring the late, great Pimp C.

Peter Peter ft Coeur de Pirate- Tergiverse
Peter Peter- Homa

Peter Peter is a very recent discovery of mine, a folk/pop artist from Montreal that sings in French. I bought his album after only seeing a few videos of him performing a few songs acoustically, and I must regrettably inform you that the CD's mastering is absolutely piss poor. The songs are still pretty sweet, but it sounds like poo, man. Peter Peter makes really depressing minimal pop music, with a touch of folky whispering included. This might not be your cup o' tea, but I enjoy it a whole lot.

Swedish House Mafia- Save the World (Style of Eye & Carli remix) (REMOVED BY REQUEST)

Yeah, I went there. This has probably been posted on everyone and their mother's blog, but given its undeniable summery anthem feel, I figured I might as well include it. This will probably rule the clubs, beaches and terrasses this summer, for sooth. Warning: May induce fist-pumps galore.

Mata ft Mali Boi, M.P & Big P.O.P.E- Streetz

Block Beataz in this bitch. Besides Yelawolf & G.Side, I guess I haven't really been hearing too much about the Huntsville scene, but I still bump old PRGz & Slow Motion Soundz tunes on the regular. This was one of the more 'street' tunes that they released, a heavy trunk-rattling banger with an absolutely amazing beat. Mali Boi, who produces most of the Paper Route tunes, and raps on a few tunes, is nuts, and Big P.O.P.E still has one of the most unique voices in rap.

Diplo & Douster- ON! (REMOVED BY "REQUEST")

Again, this has been posted quite a bit elsewhere, but it's a really neat collabo between two of the dopest club DJs out there, so I just had to share it. Not really sure what to call this. Grunts, beeps, wild percussion and fart sounds make the club go wild.

Lunice & Young L- Hip Pop (remix)

Merci #basedgod. Waaaaaaaaaay too much (dare I say it...) swag for one tune. Thanks to Southern Hospitality for putting this together, really doe. Montreal x Bay Area. Lucky Me x Legendary Inc. Good x Lord.

James Drake is a one-off collaboration between two Philedelphia-based DJs. Mr Carribean and Bombé have just put out this re-edit/mashup mixtape of James Blake & Drake songs, and surprisingly, it works.

I'm not usually into the whole mash-up scene, but given that Bombé is the homie and I trust his taste/skills, I had to give it a spin.

While a large number of you might not like either Drake or James Blake, this re-imagining of their tunes fits extremely well together, and is the perfect laid-back summer music. This is mighty proper atmospheric r&b for a beautiful day.

We are failing pretty miserably at updating this week, so I've prepared 4 posts in advance, which will all drop in the next few days. We shall redeem ourselves in your eyes, my friends. Do not fret.

This morning, I've got a really dope post lined up for you, featuring 4 tremendously fly tunes. We have a great remix of The Shoes by our confrère Mackpaye, an incredibly trippy tune by Al Ripken Jr, a preview of the upcoming Pelican Fly release , and a mellow reggae tune.

The Shoes - Cover Your Eyes(Mackpaye Remix) by Mackpaye

Mackpaye is ATV fam, and we're pretty stoked to present to you his newest production, an amazing remix of French producers The Shoes' song Cover Your Eyes.

He's pretty much a maestro of proper house music, stuff that sounds champagne-soaked and forces you to two-step with the quickness. This particular production, which is already supported by The Shoes themselves, is probably his best work to date. It starts with a delightful piano line, and then injects a healthy amount of uptempo bass, snaps and flutes into the mix. Cover Your Eyes is already a pretty groovy tune, but Mackpaye's take on it is so unbelievably organic and raw that you can't help but listen to it on repeat. Keep it up homie, you're on the right track.

Al Ripken Jr- Everything I Got Now

Holyyyyyyyyyyyy mother of god. The first time I heard this frantic behemoth of a tune was during Lunice's set at the Boiler Room, where he played a few seconds of it, literally stopped the music to tell everyone how dope it is, and then restarted it and started wylin' out as he usually does. Everything I Got Now is one of the craziest tracks in recent memory. This is pop-and-lock music on amphetamines.

We posted the vid on our Facebook page a while back if you want to check it out. The part I'm talking about is around 22 minutes in. Oh, and become a fan of the page while you're at it.

Al Ripken Jr also released a free EP under the name Captain Cougar via Top Billing a few days ago, which you can get here. It's on that sci-fi lazeriffic rap tip, and totally worth the download.

Keep an eye out for this bad boy, people, because his recent output is unbelievable.

Lucid - Kalso (Original Mix) by pelicanfly

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: Pelican Fly is definitely one of my favorite labels. This young Belgian label is my coup-de-coeur; my recent obsession. They've only put out two releases so far, the Richelle & Mister Tweeks EPs, but both of them are been so tremendously insane and fresh-sounding that I couldn't wait to see what they had in store for us next.

Their newest release, the Thy EP (FLY003), will be released on the 17th of June, and it comes to us straight from Australia. Lucid, an insane producer I've been following for a while, is a perfect choice for the third Pelican Fly release. His innovative style is pretty out-there and bizarre (in a good way), and this riddim continues the trend. Kalso is pretty much the audio equivalent of descending into madness, a grandfather/cuckoo clock & kazoo-sampling carnival of horrors. The EP will feature 4 original tracks, and remixes from Pelican Fly's own Richelle and Bay Area producer Cosmic Revenge.

Don't forget to follow Pelican Fly on soundcloud, they'll probably start releasing previews of the other songs soon enough. My prediction: Thy will be a pretty wild and unbelievably trippy ride. Insane asylum swag.

Pressure Buss Pipe- All is Well

To finish off the post, I figured I'd delve into a bit of laid-back reggae. Pressure Buss Pipe, the talented Rastaman most known for his classic anthem 'Love and Affection', which we've already posted in the past (here!), puts in a solid effort with this amazing love tune.

Pressure is one of the greatest artists in modern reggae, and this gorgeous tune should put you in a great mood. If you've never heard 'Love and Affection', though, do yourself a bloody favor and download that shit from our site pronto. It is one of my favorite songs, real talk.

Ketslugs: Swag (mix)

Ketslugs is a new project between two DJs in the south of France. Ketzian and OldSlugs, two friends from the French town of Perpignan, have very recently started to adventure into the wild world of production.

In order to hype up their new Ketslugs project, they've released this sweet 37 minute mix that highlights some of the most gifted talent in electronic music at the moment. Swag, the mix we're featuring today, is a solid selection of uptempo, somewhat unclassifiable house music. The producers featured in the mix are all known for blurring the lines between genres, and Ketslugs keeps the groove jacking around for the entirety of the mix. I dig the fact that it doesn't really stay in one particular vibe, and even though the tempo doesn't switch up too much, I must say that the mixing is pretty on-point as well.

And let's be honest, finishing with a little bit of Montreal flavour like ITFW and Lunice gains quite a few points in my book as well, haha.

Ketslugs will be releasing their first tunes on their soundcloud page soon, so I recommend that you bookmark it. If this mix is any indication, these two dudes have a great ear for selection, rhythm and style, and their future productions are bound to reflect that. Keep an eye out.

The Chain Gang of 1974- Undercover (Twin Shadow remix)

Great remix of Undercover by one of my favorite acts, those warriors of radness, Twin Shadow. It is a strange remix, a bit all over the place in terms of arrangements, but it still retains the poppy melodies and 80s grooves that Twin Shadow is so well-known for.

Dungeon Family- Follow the Light

The Dungeon Family is one of the most underrated collectives in music. They are not only responsible for some of the most important and influential rap albums of the past 20 years, but the founders of the Dungeon Family have also been mentors for a lot of southern talent like Outkast, Goodie Mobb, Killer Mike, Bubba Sparxx, Sleepy Brown and so many more. Every time I think of the Dungeon Family, I'm reminded of an old VH1 special on Outkast where they'd recount how Rico Wade and the rest of Organized Noize would force them to run around the block while freestyling in order to master their breath control. A lot of people disrespect Southern rap as being without substance, but Dungeon Family's discography alone blows that argument out of the water.

Jacques Greene- Lay it Down (Nacho Lovers remix)

So fucking good. Jacques Greene is releasing an EP on UNO NYC next week, so XLR8R was kind enough to share this deep, rhythmically grandiose remix by Toronto's Nacho Lovers to hype up the release a bit. This remix is putting me in a great mood, and sugar-coating my anticipation of the gorgeous summer to come.

Ashanti- Fancy (Brenmar remix)

B-B-B-B-Brenmar. Epic, sexy and filled to the brim with bass, as per the usual. Brenmar for prez.

Fils de Vime used to be rapper in a group called "Epilogues", but he's devoted all of his recent time & energy to producing and DJing around Luxembourg, Germany and France, among other locales.

Fils de Vime- 888 (demo) [128kbps, sorry]

My personal fave would be 888 (demo), but the other tunes are solid as well. He has a very dark approach to minimal techno, but it works. His bio describes his sound as the audio equivalent of a Black Velvet, interestingly enough. He also has several dope podcasts on his MixCloud page, which you should really check out post-haste. I figured it would be time to resurrect my long-dormant weekly segment once again. We've been extremely busy this past month, and our posting has often taken a hit, but now that we're speeding towards a glorious summer, we'll definitely have more time to focus on the complete redesign of the site.

Zubi: Everlasting Drops mix

Here's a brand new mix from a well-known DJ/producer & promoter from Montreal, the talented Zubi.

He was one half of the now defunct rave duo NROTB, but these days he focuses most of his energy on his DJing and bringing dope producers to our shores. He's a shameless lover of all things house, but is obviously not afraid to dive effortlessly into more tech-y EDM as well during his sets.

Zubi throws a monthly party at Velvet Speakeasy called United Groove, which has seen the likes of Camel, Mowgli, Egyptrixx, Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team and more throw down very memorable sets. Although I've only been to one of these parties so far, I've heard great things about them, and I definitely recommend hitting them up at least once if you live in Montreal.

His most recent mix, Everlasting Drops, is a fantastic voyage through various memorable grooves. House, techno and UK Bass are all seamlessly brought together and treated with equal reverence. He releases a new mix every few months, and this one comes just in time for the great thaw we call springtime. Piknic Electronik only starts in a few weeks, but this should tide you over until then. We're very stoked to finally see this project come to fruition. Starting a mix series is something that we've been thinking about doing for a long time, and it's dope to finally be able to share it with you.

Azamat Bogdanov is a DJ & producer from Perpignan, France, who now currently resides in our very own Montreal. This full-bearded tastemaker is one of the most versatile and innovative club DJs currently slanging tunes in the city, and his recent foray into production with ITFW is making a lot more people take notice of his talent, deservedly. He's also a member of the French DJ/producer collective La Big Familia, and as mentioned several times, a resident DJ and curator of the Boomclap weekly at Blue Dog Motel.

Every Saturday afternoon, Azamat B. broadcasts a live Ustream show on Radio Los Santos, and usually invites a slew of guests, who have more often than not played at Boomclap the night before. Chillin at home and streaming his and his guests' (who've included Canblaster, DJ Rashad and LOL Boys, to name a few) sets rates pretty high on the list of laid-back hangover cures, a welcome conclusion to the usual Boomclap weekend debauchery.

Once Azamat B. agreed to do the first Avenge The Virgins mix, I was definitely intrigued by what kind of vibes he would bless us with. Would it be a ghetto rap set, a hedonistic uk bass rave set, or a hands-in-the-air straight house set?
Well, it turns out that he actually chose to do it on a relatively underground/unknown style of house music, Ballroom or Vogue house, birthed in dark, swanky LGBT clubs.

I knew next to nothing about it, although I had heard its heavy influence on a few of my favorite artists, like Azari & III. After doing a bit of research, I discovered that it is actually an extremely wild scene (see: Paris is Burning), with a huge focus on sexual, groovy ass house music. For 52 minutes, Azamat B. takes you on a manic journey from the late eighties to 2011, building the vibe up to a rolling crescendo, then descending into sensual two-step territory . The song selection and mixing is pretty much beyond reproach, and Jackin Around features solid tunes from the great ballroom producer DJ MikeQ, as well as recent output from Tom Flynn, Maurice Donovan and Boddika.

For most of us, this is also the first preview of an unreleased Prince Club tune called 'Utopia', which is sounding positively amazing, and a rad original by dapper don Sinjin Hawke called 'It's Over'.

Gainsbourg tried his hand at pretty much every music style he could think of, and still made it sound remarkable. A notorious ladies man, he pretty much bedded a sizeable amount of the most gorgeous women in France. Boss status forever.

It was a pleasant surprise to hear Jackmaster drop this during his set at the Boiler Room this past tuesday. Classic cut from their Kid A album.

Botnek have been making some serious moves recently, and their tunes have been championed by none other than influential UK DJs Kissy Sell Out and Jaymo & Andy George, who have played several of their bangers on their respective BBC Radio One shows. These two tunes were recently featured on LA blog Gotta Dance Dirty, and I am extremely impressed by how dope they are. Both members of Botnek are now installed in Montreal, and are ready to set the city aflame with their brand of steamroller-heavy and extremely melodic electro. Keep your eyes out for their upcoming Plonk EP, scheduled to be released on one of the hottest labels at the moment, Discobelle Records. Some of the best Canadian club music out there at the moment.

Seattle has proven to be jammed with talented emcees. SuperFire is another name to add on the list. I got introduced to these guys by Sol, another guy rapping from this "filthy" city. ITFW- Haters / Aaliyah EP

First of all, large up Discobelle for dropping a big post on Montreal boys ITFW and releasing the EP for free yesterday.

(I seem to be on a very Montreal-centric kick recently, for some reason. Well, whatever, it's all love, I'm sure you don't mind. Ça déborde de talent icitte, tabernak. )

ITFW, one of our city's finest DJ/producer duos, have been gaining a steady amount of love and respect since their massive tune Surgeon was featured here (modesty? heh), and released on Truancy Records' first compilation album about month ago. The strength of that release has definitely put them on on many people's 'names to watch in 2011' lists, and we're always down to support the local scene.

Made up of two expatriates now makin' big moves in Montreal, S.H. & Azamat Bogdanov, IFTW are very well known in Montreal for their distinctively swagged-out take on r&b/rap/bass, as well as for their fantastic DJ sets. We've mentioned the name almost weekly, but some might not know that these guys are the curators and resident DJs every at Boomclap on fridays at Blue Dog Motel, along with Markus of LOL Boys. Real heads know the deal, this is one of the dopest weekly parties in the entire city.

Today, we're happy to introduce you to yet another delirium-inducing ITFW release, the very raw and heavy Haters, an original tune that samples Rick Ross' The Boss to great effect. It combines the unmistakeable swagger of Rozay with heavy synths, phenomally deep bass and drums pulled straight out of Juke.

This is some 2011 Knuck If You Buck shit. Dopest song to throw bows to released this year, if you ask me.

As well, ITFW has blessed us all with a 5 song EP of Aaliyah remixes. Although Aaliyah tunes are more-or-less sacrosanct, ITFW are well aware that they are treading on sacred ground and do her legacy justice with these rad reworks. I've been waiting a while for new material from these guys, so to have all this stuff dropped on my lap yesterday was quite the treat.

Grown Folk: City Wind EP preview

After patiently waiting for a few months, we're glad to finally announce the release of Grown Folk's debut EP on the up-and-coming Australian label Templar Sound, who've also released the Dro Carey Much Coke EP & The Bennisons' debut single.

Grown Folk, who've been featured on Avenge The Virgins pretty much monthly, is the brainchild of Montreal-based Drew (formerly Kid Aloha) and Brendan (formerly Roledex). It should come as no surprise to those of you familiar with their past productions that this talented duo is taking the house music world by storm and razing everything in their path. Today, I present to you a preview of their debut EP City Wind, to be released on May 16th on the aforementioned Templar Sound.

From deep, sultry vibes to dandy grooves and heavy percussive riddims, this EP has it all. This is ballroom rave music, with both feet firmly entrenched in the dancefloor. Grown Folk have always been quite versatile in their production style, and have concocted a stunning debut EP that sounds as great and effective at a late afternoon BBQ party as it does at an early morning after party.

The tracklist, in order of appearance in the preview, is as follows:

I, for one, am really stoked that these guys are finally getting to drop their debut release, as we've pretty much profiled them since their inception, and it's nice to see their project come to fruition. This release is going to be major league swag, best believe it.

Finally, I've included their immeasurably rad tune Steady Movin for your listening pleasure. Although we had already included it in the post about Truancy Records, I figure that it wouldn't hurt to remind you why Grown Folk is one of the most promising new acts to keep your eye on. Steady Movin' is a nigh-legendary flip on a Cam'ron sample that has gotten a lot of love, and if there's any justice in the world, we'll be able to someday get our hands on the LOL Boys VIP edit of it and share it with you fine people.

LOL Boys: LOL Boys EP

If you've been reading this blog for any length of time, our love for LA/Montreal electronic music duo LOL Boys should be apparent. Therefore, when news started spreading that they were releasing their first full length EP, on Discobelle Records, no less, I was extremely psyched. They always have something mindblowingly bizarre up their sleeves, and this self-titled EP is no exception.

LOL Boys are a duo who met through an internet message board, and due to a common love of music/percussion/weird ass rhythms, started linking up and created a monster of a project that has seen DJs, producers and fans alike going absolutely apeshit. Although they were placed into the 'tropical house' box due to the genre's former dominance of the musical landscape at that time, their productions were entirely too unique to pigeonhole. LOL Boys' tunes draw inspiration from genres that are typically at opposite ends of the spectrum, like juke, tribal guarachero (3ball), reggaeton, electro and more. There is a reason that they get a lot of love from their peers, and that is because their whole approach, from the audio to the visual, is unique as hell. Their music is a inescapable meme, an infectious creature that you are irrevocably drawn to. Trippy, tribal & tremendous. (As a sidenote, I am killin' it at the alliteration game)

The self-titled LOL Boys EP is really quite phenomenal, no matter how alien it might sound. These dudes kind of break all of the rules, and it works. Grimy amp feedback somehow warps into something melodic, a bizarre latin carnival sample mutates into a soulful reggaeton rave anthem, something that sounds like a Hans Zimmer soundtrack on DMT feels right at home in the middle of a rainforest, and well, Blockz. The video posted above pretty much describes what goes through my head when I hear it.

Reks, an other dope rapper from Boston, recently released his latest album called R.E.K.S.(Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme). This track is one of the many great songs on this compilation. In overall, great productions & Reks has that good hiphop vibe going on through out the album. Been doing his thing for quite some time and also had the chance of collaborating with some of the biggest names in the game (The Clipse, Ghostface Killah, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Redman, De La Soul, Method Man, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Boot Camp Click). Make sure to check him out, he also has a dope song on the album featuring Freeway. gotta looooove it

Knux - Bang ! Bang !
Knux, from New Orleans, Louisiana, is best known for their alternative hip hop style mixed up with a bit of rock and electronic music. This track is considered one of the singles off their debut album called : Remind Me In 3 Days. Sure is a bit more energetic than Reks' track. You can also easily recognize the influence of New Orleans on their style.
