OFWGKTA pt 1: Earl Sweatshirt

So here it is, finally. I realized that I could not do the crew justice by making a mega-post, so I'm going to break it down into segments. Every week, I'll profile a member of the OFWGKTA collective, posting a whole bevy of mixtapes, tracks and videos. I truly believe that these dudes are the fuckin' future of rap, in more ways than one. Tyler The Creator (aka Ace Creator, aka Wolf Haley), Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats, Mike G, MellowHype, Jasper, Earl Sweatshirt. These names mean almost nothing to you now, but mark my words, these dudes are going to blow the fuck up. Get on the bandwagon while you still can. These are some of the most talented and dope teenagers making music today.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All.
Fuck Steve Harvey.
Free Earl.
Golf Wang.

I'm a hot and bothered astronaut
Crashing while jackin off
To buffering vids of Asher Roth eatin applesauce
Sent to Earth to poke Catholics in the ass with saws
And knock blunt ashes into they caskets and laugh it off

Earl Sweatshirt is a 16 year old nutcase from the West Coast of the United States, California to be precise. Much like Tyler, The Creator, he has a somewhat peculiar obsession with violence, murder and macabre shit, but Earl is an absolute monster with the punchlines.

He's got a really vicious flow, and doesn't shy away from spitting whatever's on his mind. This is not Gangsta rap, Cocaine rap, Backpacker rap or Conscious Hip Hop, this is a fucked up hybrid of everything that makes the youth of today tick. An amalgamation of every gnarly thing you loved about being a teen. Skateboarding, fuckin' girls, doin drugs, goin' buck wild, writing graffiti, etc. Odd Future brings such a raw energy back into a genre that was in dire need of a reboot.

Of course, a lot of people have a problem with the lyrics, which often glorify rape and rife with homophobia. Of course, I would never condone that type of shit, but if you focus on the lyrics, you're kind of missing the point. It isn't all about the punchlines, really. Look at the bigger picture.

Wolf Gang is punk rock reincarnated, man. All that nihilism and hedonistic energy that defined countless generations is on its way back to the top of the heap. These kids make their own beats, (mostly) direct their own videos, and make power moves just by being plain dope. While the productions aren't DJ Toomp-esque masturbatory KORG bangers, they're actually pretty dope, albeit a bit minimalist and sparse.

I've posted a few songs to get you familiar with the dopeness that is Earl Sweatshirt, along with his album. Oh, and the reason that you've probably been seeing/hearing messages to "FREE EARL"??

No, it isn't because dude is locked up in a county jail or doin' time in the feds. His mom heard his album, got pissed, and sent him to bootcamp. p-u-r-e j-o-k-e-s.

Possibly one of the reasons why Odd Future is succeeding is that they've got their fingers on the pulse of what makes today's youth tick (no shit, given that they are the target audience). Kids, in this day and age, love free shit, so OFWGKTA happily obliges. All of the collective's mixtapes are free to download, so they can be passed around like a big ol' blunt. Here is Earl Sweatshirt's album, called EARL, the one that got him grounded/sent to bootcamp. I'm guessin his moms wasn't too thrilled with the lyrics, ahaha.

Hope you dig this shit, cause you're gonna be inundated with it for the next few weeks. Booooooooooooooooom, motheruckers. This is the new Wu-Tang, like it or not.

ODD FUTURE.

  3. First of all, OF is the F. Second, The minimalistic production is a huge part of their genius. The way the beat doesn't flow forces you listen to everything and not just be subdued by the melody like the rest of this commercial BS. It makes you conscious. Well, that's my opinion atleast. But yeeeeah, these kids are fucking awesome but alot of people don't understand them. Oh well, fuck'em. OFWGKTA

  14. The only things they have in common with the beginnings of Wu is that they are a big ass crew and skaters like em.

The comparison to all the ICP label groups is a little more on point because of the violence in the raps, but they are more open to the world of music and genuine. What you see is what you get, not somebody acting out fantasies.

Now that they have been on MTV, Fallon, and other mainstream outlets it will be interesting to see how their career goes for the next year or two. Will they get tighter, split up, sell out, evolve, or just be that weird crew that only skaters like?

Personally I'd like to see em do some tracks with El-P on production/rhymes or Anti-pop Consortium so the music will smack people twice as hard.

  15. Does anyone else think that Earl's voice sounds like Mr. Lif? If they were both on a track I don't know if I could tell who was who.

  16. Haha man this shi is funny these fools are like dopee like ahh but that fool aint locked up he in boot camp his mom got mad at him haha...but i hate the fact that they disrespect the bible and stuff

  17. I thought they're more the "metal" of hiphop, with their nihilistic lyric. But "punk rock" of rap is a good description, too.

  18. Hmm. i think a group like The Ninjaz are probably more the new Wu Tang than them tho.. These cats more like new N.W.O. They got rage. POWER and are def gone run wit that.

  28. NEXT WU TANG??? naw bro. hell no. OF its dope. sick ass, relevant ass production. but you gotta acknoledge that home level shit is super common now. an mpc, synth, and didgital 8 track is all it takes. theyer all talented but not the most talented by far. california is full of retarded good mcs. these dudes were just in the right place at the right time doin the right thing at the 10 year cycle of dark music. remember eminem dropped around 2001. and nirvana around 1991. tons of goth in 81. and ozzy in around 71

lyrical content: its been done guys. its eminem shit. its icp shit. its been done before. whats different is

    1) their black
    2) their young as shit
    3) tylers a fucking star... period. sick vocal!
    4) hodgy and tyler are amazing preformers
    5) they have A WHOLE LOT OF MUSIC
    6) you can sell anything to kids these days, ...especially skate boarding

i like what im hearing, but lets not say theyer completely origional, theyer really not. and dont fuckin compare them to wu tang. thats just crazy talk. lets not give them too much credit for getting signed, even they were suprised it happened this soon

give them credit where it belongs. head 1st stage dive. ppl getting seriously hurt at shows. i seen them at sxsw, it was straight up dangerous. great ideas. SELF PRODUCTION and most of all early success ect.

  29. Y would anyone compare these guys to ICP, they had kinda violent lyrics, but it always sounded like a joke or just too humorous, not to mention they dressed like clowns, thats just lame bro. might as well be drag queens. these guys are sick tho, doctor copse fucker style lyrics but without the growling voice.
